Responding to a report about a hostage situation that included one dead, police officers descended on a home in Oviedo, Fla. late Wednesday night, guns drawn. Inside they found a terrified family of four, who had been asleep — and safe — at least until they heard the doorbell ring and saw the rifle barrel poke through the front door.
Seeing what appeared to be “an arsenal,” the father of the unidentified family told Orlando’s Channel 9 that he and his wife assumed they were victims of a home invasion. “They have rifles, they have guns, and I said, 'Let's get out of the house,' so we ran down the hallway and got our two boys up."
The family were not hostages, but they were victims, people who mistakenly ended up on the receiving end of a dangerous hoax called “swatting.” The criminal prank — the type of which is increasingly common — all began because the address where the family lived was scraped from an out-of-date Xbox account.

Lt. Mike Beavers, the Oviedo police spokesman, told NBC News that prior to accessing the Xbox user's account, the hackers attempted to extort the teen for one of is map packs, a downloadable extension gamers can purchase to add functionality to popular multiplayer games.
"They they were trying to get the young man to give them a copy of what he had purchased, and they said if he didn't, they were going to cause the police to come to his house by calling in a bomb threat," Beavers said. When the teen didn't comply, the Xbox player’s tormentors apparently accessed his account where they found an address.

Police later confirmed that this was the former home of the harassed gamer. The hackers, having obtained the old address, had called in the threat as retaliation, sending police to the unsuspecting — and totally unaffiliated — family.
They need to catch some of the idiots that do this and make an example out of them. There are a lot of real assholes on XBL.
I honestly have no idea how you even get involved with someone else on Xbox Live. I've played a few games, never had an urge to message/add someone I've played with. I just don't really see them as being 'there' like on PC, I don't hear any chat or anything, they're just like.. NPCs to me. Only people I've ever talked to on there is my friends.
Im pretty sure that even in america they can tell who called the police via cameras if its a public phone, and they just trace your number/location otherwise
Online gaming is serious business.

Most of these stories seem to be teenagers and people that put their stuff up on youtube so chances are it's people off of a forum.
Can't the police trace the hoax call back to the idiots who wasted their time? I mean this prank have a serious consequences and might get someone killed.
this is why we should ban assault weapons and video games
thanks obama

This new "swatting" trend is stupid and dangerous as fuck.
50 bucks it was some COD map pack.
This new "swatting" trend is stupid and dangerous as fuck.
Its only a matter of time before a home owner thinks someone is trying to break in and opens fire on police. One of these days someone is going to die because of this stupid shit.
It's seriously dangerous as fuck
Swatters are cunts; there is no honour in this kind of false-blaming. It's almost like the degenerate days of the witch-hunt, where individuals would be accused of being witches when there was no such thing as magic or psychic powers, as some sort of petty revenge.
Swatters probably deserve punishments of a humiliating nature, making them feel shame, sorrow and dishonour to such a degree that they are never the same again.

It happens. A SWAT team raided a home belonging to a former marine because they suspected he had weed, it was a no-knock raid so he had a bat to try to fend off what he assumed to be robbery, he died. Another instance was someone getting shot because they held a remote and it was confused for a gun.
Since this is an increasing trend, you're going to be desensitizing SWAT to the point where response time might be affected and a raid wont be taken with full alert and seriousness.
Why do I never hear about this happening on PSN or PC services
is it that bad that the one service people have to pay for to have is the one with the most incredible assholes in it
Classic Python; how can ye go wrong with that?

The line is "I got better" unless that was the point.
Swatters should be charged with attempted murder to be honest.
Friend of mine got more or less "v&" or "swatted" eg. the german equivalent of it, it's a fucking pain in the ass, they confiscated tons of his and my stuff just because some asshole claims he distributed cp.
Furthermore we know who did it but we can't do shit about it since he used a german middle man.
This "swatting" is absolutely disgusting and a waste of government resources.
Well, time to stay out of XBL for a while
It's not only a XBL thing, it's a generally developing attitude, especially since there are people who sell "swatting" to kids, this is like selling Botnet access but 1000x worse.
Why are people rating this thread funny?
This swatting thing is very old, but very dangerous, i guess gaming is serious business
good thing i don't have xbox
this trend is so fucked up and dangerous and the guys that do it are the hugest assholes in the world, so why do i laugh every time i think about this playing out?
Why are people rating this thread funny?
This thread is just like the one with the black dude who shot 3 white people because he wanted a revolution against Caucasians. It's very serious, while being almost too absurd.

Yes, but my guess is that it from from Skype or something, so no.
They can "ping" a cell phone which will get you how far the nearest cell tower was.
actually it's not really new, it has been around for some years now

Or they develop serious mental health issues, PTSD for example.
