Graphic Design: The entire brand system of my robot security company (lotso pics)

I don't know if you guys remember my thread I made several months ago asking for critiques on my logo for Zionics, the company I invented for my graphic design major that specializes in Robot Security.
Well today I just turned in a 60 page book detailing the entire corporate brand platform of said company.
I may or may not upload the full 60 page PDF, but here's some pictures I've taken of my book I created, and screencaps of the PDF (the JPG exporting tool completely forks with some of the graphic zones, be warned).
Note that the screencaps are of the spreads of the book - which means each screencap is actually two pages (one page on right the other on left)
IMO one of my weakest spreads, it's of exterior signage (the JPG exporter fucked up the graphic zones, sorry :( ):
I'm not looking to make major changes seeing as it's already turned in, but I'd be interested in hearing your guy's opinions. This is the first major graphic design project I've undertaken.

Here's an update, I redid my cover:

I can't say much else apart from it looks amazing. Especially as I hit the photos of the actual printed pages. +1 artistic. :h:
i think the mock up could be improved as it's a bit raggedy around the edges, but the content is amazing! great job!
I'm impressed that you've really got everything done, the book and all.

Totally agreed - it's something I'll probably redo during my portfolio development class. I'm terrible at craft, as I'm most comfortable working digitally.
It's mostly the cover thats a little ragged. I unfortunatly ran out of time making it so I couldn't try and redo it without completely losing my patience :frown:
Oh wow, that actually looks good. I was expecting something terribad. Good job.
The cover does look a little rough, though.
Looks badass.
Exaclty, I saw the first image, and was reading the beginning of the text, and thought it looked ok.
Then I scrolled down and
shit
got
real
Thanks all :)
I like it. It felt very consistent.
it looks very very messy though, very cluttered
It looked really messy and kind of shitty to be honest going from the pictures of the pages but seeing it printed makes so much more sense and it looks great.
I liked the kind of cluttered feel to it.
Overall it's amazing, great work.
Really cluttered but nice designs overall.
"Complex Robots" doesn't sound like an intrinsically positive thing.
can i buy your mug?
I was going for complex over cluttered. I didn't think it would make much sense to go with a smoother or more minimalistic design, especially since I think it is an over-used design trend. Effectively, I was attempting to convey complexity (versus using a more minimalistic style as a crutch).
Thanks everyone for the comments regardless :)
I giggled at PMS
I would've gone with a simpler more memorable logo, honestly, but i like the consistency of the theme(s) throughout.
'Zionics'
are you a jew?
At first I was like: "Whaaa'?!"
Then I was like: "Oooh"
Good job mate, looks good. Although the digital scans seem very cluttered as mentioned earlier.
I'm gonna go make my own now, just for shits and giggles.
The main hexagonal logo doesn't work. It's just a side image more than a logo. You should work it into the text or at least create some kind of comprehensible recognizable image within the logo that relates to the subject. At the moment it's just a hexagon that looks like a simple electronic circuit or something. It just seems bland. What does a hexagon have to do with robotics? Don't just say "I liked the shape". In design you need to look past all that and really work everything together and every single detail must relate to the subject matter. If you really are going for the idea of "complexity" then you should be doing this. I like the text though. It's just the logo that stands out to me. Otherwise for a first design project I'm impressed. Keep at it and listen to criticisms etc etc blah blah blah.
:)
EDIT: Also be aware of space. Could do with a bit of work.

You should never 'go for' overly cluttered. That is a very bad thing, even if you think it 'fits'.
This is true. You can achieve the 'complex' theme without use of clutter.
And complex and clutter are two different things.

Read his post again; he says complex OVER cluttered.
By that, he clearly meant that minimalistic looks wouldn't suit the project. Also stated in quoted post.

Yeah but it doesn't work. Clutter doesn't work. This is what he has done. Clutter does not = Complex. Read Rusty100's post again...
I think it's beautifully done. Don't personally know much about graphic design though, but the outer cover of the book i would cover with some form of rigid black edge or something because the cardboard part kind of seems to stand out i think. Love the pages, you've inspired me to read about this whole graphic design thing on wikipedia now, seems much more to it than i thought!
Thanks for all the comments guys, even the negative ones. It makes a bit more sense when you see the full book in person, since about 1/3rd of the pages is printed on a thicker paper and use a much cleaner design to balance out all the details on the information spreads (see: chapter heading and graphics spreads). Still, I see your points in it being too cluttered. Several of the spreads I whipped up really quickly in leu of meeting a deadline, such as the exterior wayfinding one which in my mind come off as the least effective.
If anyone's curious, I just got my grades in and got an 80% on the project.
10% taken off due to poor craft in mounting (which isn't shown, and I rushed out the day it was due) and the other 10% because of the cover not really working from a craft and functional standpoint which I also agree. I'm terrible at craft :frown: It's the one thing I can literally spend all day trying to get right and never make any progress.
craft seems to be a really important thing for graphics related stuff. i'm pretty good at crafting (tutors always seem to show my work as examples) but i guess it's just something that a) you have to practice and b) you have to be a near perfectionist. or, not so much a perfectionist, but to have a very high standard to achieve.
just start practising with small projects, like making boxes from nets and stuff, and never compromise your quality, because it will show.
Yeah I know what you mean. I just feel like I have a large amount of patience and intuition when working digitally, but physical craft I have almost no mental patience for and my personal intuition doesn't seem to click with it at all. Yet, I still want to make something really cool.
I think when I redo the cover I'm going to seriously keep it simple and give me a couple of weeks to work out details. Probably still keep the emboss though, since people seemed to of liked that in person.
80% is sweet. Nice work man!
