In Chicago, hundreds of protesters gathered outside a McDonalds at 6.15am. As a large "Christmas Grinch" ambled about in freezing temperatures, demonstrators chanted for the minimum wage to be increased to $15 per hour. It was the first of nine strikes in Chicago, with employees at McDonalds, Wendy's, Walgreens, Macy's and Sears also due to walk off shift. Low wage workers were due to strike across 100 cities through the day, including Boston, Detroit, New York City, Oakland, Los Angeles and St Louis. "To put it in perspective, yesterday I got paid, today I have not a dollar in my pocket," said Akilarose Thompson, 24. She was on strike from the McDonalds in Chicago's West Town – the scene of Thursday morning's protest that kicked off actions around the city. Thompson has worked at McDonalds for almost a year, serving customers on the cash register or on the drive-thru window. She got a pay rise in June and now earns $8.28 an hour – three cents above Illinois's minimum wage of $8.25. Thompson works a second job too, at Red Lobster, but still has to go to food banks to support her and her 15-month-old daughter.
I now have come to appreciate my shitty Canadian minimum wage job. 10.50 and hour ain't too bad compared to what these guys have to go through.
Increase minimum wage to $10, the price will fluctuate by the required need of laborers, generally by $1 to $3. Example of this in action - North Dakotan McDonalds pay roughly $12 to $20 an hour, with benefits, and depending on how good the shopkeeper is, a sign on bonus of something like $300 to $1000 dollars. This is namely because most of North Dakota's manpower is in the Bakkens, but the figures pretty much speak for themselves. Fluctuation on slightly increased wage.
"Workers need a McLiving Wage"
Yeah well good for them. EDIT: I'm not being sarcastic...I think they should be paid FAIRLY.
$15/h, yeah right. You work a menial labour monkey job what do you honestly expect? Children are literally a huge expenditure of money. I cannot for the life of me understand why people would have a child on a minimum wage job. I admire her for atleast trying to toughen up through it, but people need to pull themselves aside and realize, "I work a minimum wage job, one that barley pays my car insurance, cellphone, and other items I use daily... How the hell will I pay for a child?"

Hydraulic effect. If you change the wage to something of skilled labor, then the price of everything will also increase
Pay us more for our unskilled labor!!!
$15/h, yeah right. You work a menial labour monkey job what do you honestly expect? [editline]5th December 2013[/editline] Prices here and there differ you realize that right?
Federal minimum wage is 7.25 an hour. You go ahead and try to live off 7.25 an hour, even with a 40 hour work week, (which is all you are legally allowed to work without overtime), you only make roughly $930 a month. I'd love to see you live a semi-comfortable life with that, you couldn't even pay for community college at that wage. Minimum wage needs to be raised, there is no debate about it.
Pay us more for our unskilled labor!!!
"You don't deserve to live, you dirty burger flipper. It's not like you're human or anything." It's the indifference of those without compassion for their fellow human beings that are partly to blame for why workers in the US can't get paid a decent wage.
If you're sick of being paid shit somewhere go find a new job that pays more. Your job currently does not mean its your job forever
I'm sorry, but I thought that normally your supposed to move on to better, higher paying jobs. You know? Have a goal to work toward? Nobody in their right mind would stick to working at McDonald's for fucking forever.
"Just get a better paying job you worthless sacks of shit!"
If you're sick of being paid shit somewhere go find a new job that pays more. Your job currently does not mean its your job forever
because that's easy right
Hydraulic effect. If you change the wage to something of skilled labor, then the price of everything will also increase
Exactly, I don't want to pay more for everything because some mcdonalds workers think they deserve extra money for nothing. I know I sound like a harsh bitch but it's the truth, the most they should raise it is maybe a dollar, AT MOST.
If you're sick of being paid shit somewhere go find a new job that pays more. Your job currently does not mean its your job forever
Because decently paying jobs are so easy to find. Ignore that there are three people unemployed for every job opening in the US according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, I'm sure that the people who can't find elsewhere to work are just stupid and lazy.
Yeah well good for them. EDIT: I'm not being sarcastic...I think they should be paid FAIRLY.
Well, what skills does she possess that makes her worth more? Having graduated in 2007-2008, she has had a LOT of opportunities to gain knowledge and skills to make more money. She is working a PART TIME job that requires no extraordinary education or skills. Minimum requirements, minimum wage sounds fair.
because that's easy right
Who said it was going to be easy? That's the goal you want to work towards and not stick to square one. Not everything is gonna be served on a silver platter to you.
because that's easy right
Certainly was for me. I went from making 7.50 to 8.25 then a new job at 12.05 then another new job at 13.00 and my next step will get into a position of 25-30/hr Its about having a plan.
Because decently paying jobs are so easy to find. Ignore that there are three people unemployed for every job opening in the US according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, I'm sure that the people who can't find elsewhere to work are just stupid and lazy.
so therefore just tack some numbers onto the minimum wage and that fixes all problems. Cause economics is that easy right?
Hydraulic effect. If you change the wage to something of skilled labor, then the price of everything will also increase
Paying a few extra dollars for a hamburger is worth it if it means that the employees get more of a decent living.
I'm sorry, but I thought that normally your supposed to move on to better, higher paying jobs. You know? Have a goal to work toward? They know they won't get 15 dollar wages it's just a negotiation tactic to get something more
These are the people who willingly choose dead end jobs and suddenly gets mad when they realized dead end jobs are actually dead end.
I really like what Aerolop mentioned about making sure that you have a plan. Knowing what you want to do is a pretty big part of education/getting a job. Planning for your education and making sure that you do everything you can to further it as well as making sure that you keep actively looking for opportunities to advance through the work force.
Pay us more for our unskilled labor!!!
your post sucks
Paying a few extra dollars for a hamburger is worth it if it means that the employees get more of a decent living.
How about other people who actually have to work hard and have more important jobs? Shouldnt we raise their pay instead of some fast food workers?

In a lot of cases struggling parents had a plan to support their child, but that plan went to shit. It isn't always "Oh I'll just wing it."
