z34 monte carlo that needs a trans rebuild a good idea for $500

I'm in the market for a new car (my current car is incredibly shitty)
One of my co-workers has a 96 2dr monte carlo z34 v6 3.4l automatic he rarely drives, it's in pretty good condition except for one thing, 4th gear/over drive does not engage... It drives absolutly fine in town, but if you take it on a highway or any roads in excess of 45-55mph the tach will rev high and won't switch to overdrive/4th gear.
He knows i need a new car so he said he'd give it to me for $500 and he was qouted that the rebuild would be around 1000-1500 (sounds about right to me.)
So does anyone know a good ball park average as for the cost of this would be?
Does this seem like a good idea, or should i go with financing a 3-4000 dollar car as i had originally planned.
It'd be perfect for what i need it for, just a daily driver to get to and from work. but i do need to drive 400+ miles once a month for drill.
