http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8227915.stm
News Corporation's James Murdoch has said that a "dominant" BBC threatens independent journalism in the UK. The chairman of the media giant in Europe, which owns the Times and Sun, also blamed the UK government for regulating the media "with relish". "The expansion of state-sponsored journalism is a threat to the plurality and independence of news provision," Mr Murdoch said. He was giving the MacTaggart lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival. Mr Murdoch said that organisations like the BBC, funded by the license fee, as well as Channel 4 and Ofcom made it harder for other broadcasters to survive. "The BBC is dominant," Mr Murdoch said. "Other organisations might rise and fall but the BBC's income is guaranteed and growing." News Corporation lost $3.4bn (£2bn) in the year to the end of June, which his father, News Corporation boss Rupert Murdoch, said had been "the most difficult in recent history". Other media organisations are also struggling as advertising revenues have dropped during the downturn. Mr Murdoch said free news on the web provided by the BBC made it "incredibly difficult" for private news organisations to ask people to pay for their news. "It is essential for the future of independent digital journalism that a fair price can be charged for news to people who value it," he said. News Corporation has said it will start charging online customers for news content across all its websites. It owns the Times, the Sunday Times and Sun newspapers and pay TV provider BSkyB in the UK and the New York Post and Wall Street Journal in the US. Rupert Murdoch addressed the same festival 20 years ago.
BBC is great, we don't have to pay for adverts.
He sounds like he knows what hes doing :buddy:
:monar:
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ah, does anyone really listen to that guy anymore?
The BBC is very good at what it does, unlike many news companies it broadcasts worldwide in several languages, and is fairly unbiast. Hell, it's news section is the largest broadcasting news gatherer in the world.
murdoch should just deal w/ it
Enjoy watching your Totalitarian news network. The man has a few good points.
BBC is great, we don't have to pay for adverts.
Yeah you do. You brits pay it thru your absurd TV license.
The BBC is the first and foremost broadcaster in Great Britain. And it does a bloody good job at it too.
I agree that the BBC shouldn't have a monopoly on news. In the US we have CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and :foxnews: So you can listen to whatever bias you want.
"It is essential for the future of independent digital journalism that a fair price can be charged for news to people who value it," he said.
I don't agree that you should have to pay to hear the news though.
Enjoy watching your Totalitarian news network. The man has a few good points.
Go read up on the BBC. It recieves the TV licensing fee from the government, but isn't controlled by it. In fact, the government has complained about it being bias in favour of the opposition (and visa versa, which is always a good sign).
That's just fucking stupid. Some of the best moments of British television are from the BBC. Their dead-pan expressions and lack of interest in issues makes it good news.
"It is essential for the future of independent digital journalism that a fair price can be charged for news to people who value it," he said.
£142 a year sounds pretty fair to me.
Anyone who can actually stand up and say the BBC is a bad thing is an idiot.
I agree that the BBC shouldn't have a monopoly on news. In the US we have CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and :foxnews: So you can listen to whatever bias you want.
But so can we! We've got ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and (if you pay) Sky. Anyway, this is typical of a Murdoch, the bastards. "Oh no, you can't possibly do something for the good of the general populace - how can we rich fuckers line our pockets?" It's like how they've taken all the sports - you have to pay to watch them. That shouldn't be the case! If people want to support football, why can't they see it for free? His Dad made my Dad redundant without a second thought. I'd like him and his networks to be made redundant by a combination of BBC and internet.
Murdoch isn't a libertarian, OP. [editline]08:22PM[/editline] You Brits know just as little about our politics as we know about yours.
Murdoch isn't a libertarian, OP. [editline]08:22PM[/editline] You Brits know just as little about our politics as we know about yours.
I dunno, you've explained everything to me in a lot of PM's.
Enjoy watching your Totalitarian news network. The man has a few good points. Yeah you do. Or any other large American news station for that matter, they practically invented the word biased.
