The police chief for the area in northern Kunduz province said more than 60 people were killed and wounded. An Afghan government spokesman said at least one person was killed, as accounts emerged of horrific injuries. "Last night, the Taliban tried to take a fuel tanker that they hijacked on the highway to Angorbagh village," said Baryalai Basharyar Parwani, the police chief of the Ali Abad district in Kunduz. "The fuel tanker got stuck in the river. There were local civilians with them as well. The Taliban were bombed (Friday). More than 60 people have been killed and injured," he said. A spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) under NATO told AFP: "It was an ISAF airstrike." Wounded people with extensive burns crowded a hospital in Kunduz, the capital of the northern province which lies on a main supply line for the more than 100,000 foreign troops based in Afghanistan, an AFP reporter said. Around eight were in terrible condition -- the skin burnt black and peeling off to expose raw red muscle. Others were so badly wounded, they were incapable of crying, with their badly burnt clothes stuck to their flesh. Hospital authorities could not provide an immediate number of the wounded as more patients kept arriving, crowding the recovery rooms and corridors. Around 200 to 250 villagers were believed to have gathered to take free fuel from the tankers which had been hijacked by the insurgents, said health ministry spokesman Farid Rahid in Kabul. "Unfortunately a big number of civilians were killed and wounded. The provincial health director can confirm that 12 wounded and one dead person were admitted to the provincial hospital," he told AFP. Mohammad Daud, 32, told AFP at the hospital that Taliban insurgents hijacked two fuel tankers on the highway destined for foreign troops and were trying to transport them across a river to villages in Angorbagh. "They managed to take one of the tankers over the river. The second got stuck so they told villagers to come and take the diesel," Daud said. "Villagers rushed to the fuel tanker with any available container that they had, including water buckets and pots for cooking oil. "There were 10 to 15 Taliban on top of the tanker. This was when they were bombed. Everyone around the fuel tanker died. "Nobody was in one piece. Hands, legs and body parts were scattered everywhere. Those who were away from the fuel tanker were badly burnt." The incident came four days after the US and NATO commander in Afghanistan submitted a review into the nearly eight-year war, calling for a revised strategy to defeat the Taliban and reverse the country's "serious" situation. General Stanley McChrystal has ordered the 100,000-plus Western troops under his command to change their mindset in a new set of guidelines designed to win the fight against an insurgency that is now at its deadliest. McChrystal's predecessor, General David McKiernan, was removed after less than a year on the job after deeply controversial airstrikes that killed dozens of civilians in western Afghanistan.
This is incredibly terrible. The Bundeswehr has fucked up in the past, but until now they didn't manage to kill up to 40 civilians in one action. This will cause a shitstorm, especially since most Germans want their troops to leave. Let's see if Jung will rethink some of his future plans. It will most certainly also have an impact on the elections in 3 weeks, with more people voting for the Left and Social Democratic Party.
Ouch.
Fuck yeah, go Germany.
This is the worst part about war. The innocents that get killed
Germany, fuck yeah! Also, the fatality count would've been much higher if the Taliban actually succeeded with their plan.

Apparently the trucks got stuck, so the Taliban banged at the doors of a nearby village and told them to help them get them out of the dirt. When they didn't manage it the Taliban were like "fuck it" and wanted to blow the trucks up and move on. For this they took teh gasoline out of the tanks. When the villagers heard that there was free gasoline, everyoen came and brought his wife and children to get some. That's when the explosion hit. One villager talked about his brother whose body he couldn't recognize anymore, another man lost his boy and his wife.
That'll teach those punk ass civilians to try and get free fuel.
So the airstrike went according to plan then?
So lemme get this straight, this is how it went down, right? Insurgents hijack 2 fuel tankers, drive off and get stuck in a ditch Germans Call in the Airstrike on the now stuck tankers U.S. Airforce jets take off to execute airstrike. Insurgents go to nearby villages telling the locals to "come get some free fuel" Civilians show up to get free fuel whilst the Insurgents shout Arkbar Allah, and run off. U.S. Airforce bombs Fuel Trucks. International Shitstorm ensures. So yeah, basically the Insurgents beat us at the PR game since you don't see 40+ Insurgents dead after hijacking fuel tankers you see Dozens of civilians dead after NATO Air Strike Also I don't get why Germany is getting all the credit in this bombing, all they did was request it, the U.S. Airforce were the ones who actually dropped the bombs. :hitler:
No, the insurgents didn't run off as far as we know, they didn't know what was coming either. And I don't think Germany is getting all the credit for it, just here in Germany the critizismconcentrates on the Bundeswehr. And rightly so.
Way to go Germany, I hope the officers that called in the airstrike get court marshalled. The Luftwa... Bundeswehr is doing well.
The Luftwa... Bundeswehr is doing well.
The luftwaffe is still a part of germany's army :downs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luftwaffe

I wonder what called in the strikes, if it was a German patrol I'm surprised it wasn't called off. Makes me want to think they didn't actually know where it was and called in a search and destroy strike or something. Anyway, Its unfortunate that this happened like this. Collective responsibility people.
If this was America's fault, everyone would be all "Stupid americans can't do anything right!" but since it's Germany, you're all "Fuck yea go germany you show those stupid civilians!".
That is because you always do the bad shit. You disregard human rights and several treaties to no end. We only do occasionally. :smug:
Luftwaffe sounds like a flying waffle. Therefore, Germany is cool.
Whoa those silly Bundeswehrler. I bet they were all like "gogo call them airstrike! finally we can do something!" Then it went south. Unlucky them.
Bundeswehr have had a bit of a bad run in the middle east lately. First they get held back. Then the ANA fuck up the KSK's attempt to secure high prioity targets, now this. Can't help but feel the US is indirectly responsible for influencing other countries into placing a priority on calling in air assets over actual soldiering. Not having a go at anyone, shit happens, but still. Less concentration on calling in airstrikes when not desperately needed, and more concentration on proper soldiering skills might yield better results all around. Also keep in mind however that often reports of civilian casulties will be skewed a bit.

Soldiers are becoming far to reliant on air support.

What a thread could they be? few snipers alone could take them out. Then the Bundeswehr could have handed out all the fuel to the civilians. Afterwars: Photo shooting in heroic poses in front of a waving german flag. Oh wait, then they would be fucked even more because no german is allowed to be proud of his country, showing a flag only mildly allowed during soccer games.
What the fuck germany?

Germany has mostly been there for support, only since a few months has it been doing more fighting, doing organized attacks etc. Most people in Germany are critizing this, if we have to be in Afghanistan, then as support not as a fighting nation.

Call in an airstrike and drive off? This isn't the American pilot's fault, he just drops bombs on targets thinking full well that the germans MIGHT JUST call it off when the target is completely surrounded by civilians. But no, they just sit there twidling their thumbs. The civilians wouldn't even have been there if a firefight had broken out.

They should have stayed clear. I mean, they were stealing, so it is partly their fault.
Insurgents: HEY COME STEAL SOME COALITION FUEL, DONT WORRY ABOUT IT! Honestly who didn't see the air strike coming
For the first time i'm actually proud of my country and our Bundeswehr. Terorrist fuel tanker got blown up and thieves got punished aswell. Germany 1, Terrorists and Criminals 0.
