• Nintendo is cracking down on Tool Assisted Speed Runners and ROM hackers on Youtube
PangeaPanga created several speedrun videos that were tool-assisted, which meant he needed ROMS and an emulator in order to play them. After his video “Hardest Super Mario World Level Ever” got more than a million views, Nintendo quickly issued a copyright complaint against his channel, which has destroyed the channel with multiple video takedowns. Nintendo even sent him an email, telling him that his channel is in violation of their intellectual property and that if he would like to continue uploading Nintendo content, he should do so as a partner in Nintendo’s Creator Program. Of course that program won’t approve any channel that uses ROMS or emulators in any shape or form.
Source. Here is the the pastebin of the email he received. Personally, I am not surprised they have started to crack down on this, especially since they did a purge on Nico Nico a few months back. Still saddening to see that NoJ is still out of touch with the internet.
Nintendo really doesn't like people getting creative with their properties.
Why does Nintendo still get this mad over people emulating games from their long obsolete consoles?
why don't they just put their crap on another video service and every time they upload a video they put up another 15 second long video on youtube saying "hey i put a nintendo game on vimeo, go check it out!"
Who ever is deciding these asinine actions should be fired and replaced with someone sane.
emulation is legal
It is, but only if you have gotten a ROM copy legit which is usually not the case. Who rips a ROM out of their cartridges when they can easily download it from the net in a minute?
How can you prove it wasn't though? Obviously they would have to own the cartridge but apart from that do you need to show any more proof?
How can you prove it wasn't though? Obviously they would have to own the cartridge but apart from that do you need to show any more proof?
Unfortunately, Youtube works on a 'guilty until proven innocent' and not the other way around.
Why does Nintendo still get this mad over people emulating games from their long obsolete consoles?
Because they still sell NES and SNES games for the WiiU and 3DS
Not all of them, they have a small selection
You have infringed on our copy rights! but seriously Nitendo, what the fuck
But TAS is amazing, just check this out.
so well let's start another video service for SMW and SM64 (and other) hacks Let's plays
they obviously removed them so they could hide how much is missing from mario maker :v:
But TAS is amazing, just check this out.
And now the Nintendo webcrawler will find your post and report this one too ;-;
It could be either Nintendo of America or Nintendo of Japan, but this is just retarded.
I just hope this doesn't mean they are against modding too, that would be a huge middle finger to everyone that modded their games/gave them a longer lifespan. Project M to name one.
I just hope this doesn't mean they are against modding too, that would be a huge middle finger to everyone that modded their games/gave them a longer lifespan. I think the fear they had was that people would search for "Hardest Super Mario Maker Level Ever" and find the million+ view video of "Hardest Super Mario Level Ever" which is a ROM hack, instead. The takedown is almost certainly related to the release of Super Mario Maker. Not justifying taking down TAS videos but I could see where they might have thought there would be confusion. It's still BS, though.
Along with banning it from tournaments [editline]11th September 2015[/editline] My merge :(
They already made it so if you say Project M or PM on Miiverse, you get auto banned
Yeah I've heard about this before, it's so fucking bullshit and makes Miiverse less appealing to me.
This is only going to hurt them.
I do not understand why they are against rom hacks, and tool assisted speed runs. It's pretty much the same as modding the game. I could understand it if it was the original game but you wouldn't really be able to tell if its emulated or not. Unless they said it was or showed the emulator. As no money is really lost to rom hacks as they are normally made for players looking for an insane challenge. In this case I can understand because of the title of the video, I just don't understand why its for all of it.
Not wanting to have piracy in a more respectable corner by association with modding, I suppose.
Nintendo is such a stupid company, I hardly agree with anything they do or don't do as of the past 5 years or so. [editline]11th September 2015[/editline]
Not wanting to have piracy in a more respectable corner by association with modding, I suppose.
If someone is downloading a rom, then they weren't even going to buy the game in the first place. This isn't even the problem here, they take down videos all the time just because its of their games. Imagine if a country tried to take down videos and pictures that people took on vacation to said country. Its nothing but promotion, yet they don't like it.
I still don't think nintendo understands the internet. Things like these are advertising for nintendo products, if they want to be greedy and want to be paid for free advertising by the content creators then people are just going to go elsewhere to games with developers and publishers less likely to try and destroy their source of income.
Nintendo is overall out of touch with pretty much everything. Sony and Microsoft have Youtube support in their fucking consoles, yet Nintendo does all this bullshit and gets most of the money on ads just so you can upload anything theirs. And this is just 1 of many examples, I really like Nintendo but they are horrible decision makers.

It's still BS, though.
That's exactly what I thought when it comes to ROM hacking. I figured it was a way for them to brute-force support for Super Mario Maker when browsing Youtube and to heavily encourage people to use Mario Maker, not hacked ROMs, to create custom Mario levels. It's pretty ironic, since playing hacked ROMs is a much more accurate to the games that Mario Maker tries to represent than Maker itself is.

yeah no I'm not gonna buy a wii u for Merio Maker sorry about that. I'm already working on a rom hack  Besides, the Nintendo rom hacking scene has existed since at least the early 90's and I don't think it's going away soon. And why would I want to pay money for a retro game that isn't transferable, is on an emulator with limited settings, and isn't moddable?
