Hello Facepunch, After saving up some cash, i finally got the bucks together to purchase myself a nice computer and i'd like your help! I have €1000 - €1100 to spend on a computer. This computer would mostly be used to play games, programming, ms office and a bit of Photoshop. I hope to play games as The Witcher 2, BF3 and Skyrim on high settings without any issues. I'll be using a single monitor with the resolution of 1920x1080 and i don't need a mouse, keyboard, monitor or speakers. Neiter do i need an OS. I live in the Netherlands and I'll probally purchase the parts from www.alternate.nl I hope to order the parts within this week. To get started i tried making a build myself: https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Moederborden_Socket_1155/ASUS/P8Z68-V_PRO/554645/? Asus P8Z68-V PRO € 159,90 https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/CPUs_Socket_1155/Intel(R)/Core_en_trade_i5-2500K/483770/? Intel Core I5-2500K € 179,90 https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Harddisks_3,5_inch_SATA/Samsung/HD103SJ/358022/? Samsung Spinpoint F3 € 46,99 https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Voedingen_meer_dan_600_Watt/SilverStone/Strider_SST-ST85F-P/396229/? Silverstone Strider 850W € 129,90 https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Geheugen_DDR3-1333/G.Skill/8_GB_DDR3-1333_Kit/508503/? G.Skill 8 GB DDR3-1333 Ram € 56,90 https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Grafische_kaarten_NVIDIA_GeForce_GTX/MSI/N570GTX_Twin_Frozr_III_Power_Edition_OC/547156/? MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr III € 314,- https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/DVD-reWriters_Serial-ATA/Sony_Optiarc/AD-7261S-0B/438825/? Sony Optiarc AD-7261S-0B € 23,79 https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Behuizingen_Midi_Tower/Cooler_Master/HAF_922/416171/? Cooler Master Haf 922 € 112,90 https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/CPUs_Koelers/Cooler_Master/Hyper_212_Plus/348472/? Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus € 22,99 Total: € 1.047,27 A little explanation of my thoughts: Z68 for SRT when i purchase a SSD in the future. 850W PSU, SLI in the future. Modular PSU, tidy PC/ airflow. 8GB Ram, Cheap, won't hurt. I noticed that the Cooler Master 212 Plus is recommended to alot of people at facepunch because its remarkably good for its price. Yet it's always out of stock on www.alternate.nl so i probally need a replacement. I'd like some help with a build, or changes to what I've cooked up. Thanks in advance I think that's about it. My appologies for my english and the long post.
Anyone?
Looks fine, seems like you're massively over paying though but I have no idea on the economy in anywhere but America/England so I have no idea.
That's what i thought aswell, yet on other webstores the prices are even higher. The Pound and Dollar are relatively cheap compared to the Euro as well. I guess i have to do with the high prices. Also, the Hyper 212 Plus CPU cooler is out of stock, i probally need a replacement CPU cooler but i have no knowledge about this.
Get the NH-D14 seeing as your budget is 1100.
Ok i added the NH-D14 Barely withing budget but it looks good to me. Anything i should change before i order the parts?
This ram instead: http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Geheugen_DDR3-1333/G.Skill/8_GB_DDR3-1333_Kit/372327/?tn=HARDWARE&l1=Geheugen&l2=DDR3&l3=DDR3-1333 This PSU instead: http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Voedingen_meer_dan_600_Watt/Corsair/CMPSU-850TXV2/517601/?tn=HARDWARE&l1=Voedingen&l2=meer+dan+600+Watt Case: http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Behuizingen_Midi_Tower/Fractal_Design/Define_R3_Black_Pearl/491230/? personal preference really but 112,90 euros for a HAF 922 is extremely expensive. Maybe a Lian Li 8N http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Behuizingen_Midi_Tower/Lian_Li/PC-8N/356588/?tn=HARDWARE&l1=Behuizingen&l2=Midi+Tower
First let me thank you for your feed back. I have some questions, I noticed the Ram you linked has a latency of 9-9-9-24, to 7-7-7-21 on the ram i picked. To my knowledge the latency is the clock cycles it needs to acces the Ram, is the diffrence noticable and worth the extra bucks or not and should i go with the ram you suggested? The PSU looks good, i am wondering if it is modular though, i could not find this on the website and i'd like to pay a bit more if i can get a modular PSU instead. Also the effeciency is a little less but that won't cause any trouble i think. As for the case, tough one. According to reviews the HAF922 is quite a good case. Yet i love the looks of the Fractal Design, I'll read some reviews about that.
I'm not quite certain about the RAM timing performance difference, I believe lower is better but I don't know if the difference is noticeable, I'm sure someone will come in and tell you. Power supply wise: http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Voedingen_meer_dan_600_Watt/XFX/750W_Black_Edition/534948/?tn=HARDWARE&l1=Voedingen&l2=meer+dan+600+Watt is modular, 750w is more than enough for SLI GTX 570's if you decide to upgrade so it should be no problem, and efficiency wise, anything over 80% is more than fine, the important thing with PSU's is the OEM.
The XFX PSU out of stock, unfortunatly. Its also unknown when it will be back in stock so i think i need something else again :S As for the Ram timings, lower is better indeed, but the performance diffrence is unclear to me aswell. Yet most sticks of Ram have timings of 9-9-9-24 so i doubt there is something wrong with that. Ram: https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Geheugen_DDR3-1333/Corsair/8_GB_DDR3-1333_Kit/467893/? Think this will do, CL9 timings and not those heatspreaders. I have seen some reviews from the Fractal case, everything is positive, exept that because its a silenced case, the temperatures are quite high, since this is a gaming oriented build and i will probally use 2 570s in the future these high temperatures might cause some issues. Haf 922: http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Behuizingen_Midi_Tower/Cooler_Master/HAF_922/336900/? Abit cheaper than the previous one i had included in the build but the diffrence is close to nothing. Question about the cooler: I am wondering if the gigantic NH D14 will fit into the case and if it will block any Ram slots?
it will fit in the case edit: and according to this page, it shouldn't block the ram slots with that mobo also, another page regarding ram compatibility. (Ripjaws is A-okay)
Thanks alot, very helpfull. I'll take the noctua then, seeing as it has no compatabilty problems with the motherboard at all. As for the Ram i guess either the G.Skill David Tennant linked or the Corsair i linked would be fine to use. I'm still not sure about the PSU and Case though, I am quite dissapointed that the temperatures are quite alot higher with the Fractal case then others, which wouldn't really work for a gaming system. Any recommendations on a Case or Psu?
The temperature differences would be slight if any, and I don't see what's wrong with that PSU, great efficiency, SeaSonic OEM, long warranty and cheap.
There is nothing wrong with the PSU exept that it is not in stock and it is unclear when it will get back in stock, if it ever will.
Oh I see, next one up would be: http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Voedingen_meer_dan_600_Watt/SilverStone/SST-ST75F-P/396227/?tn=HARDWARE&l1=Voedingen&l2=meer+dan+600+Watt solid PSU, great reviews, efficiency and OEM, bit plain but it'll match the R3.
Thanks, then PSU wise its sorted. Still unsure about the Fractal case honestly, reviews say it would not be recommended to use for a heavy gamer system and because the stuff to make the case silent the computer has a minimum airflow. Currently got the following without a case yet:
Honestly, just pick one you like the look of, temperature wise there's barely a difference. Here are a few other cases to think about if you're not sold on the R3: http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Behuizingen_Big_Tower/Fractal_Design/Define_XL_Black_Pearl/502439/? similar to the R3 but massive. http://www.alternate.nl/html/summaryListing.html?searchCriteria=650D&cat1=020&cat2=091&cat3=000 650D Corsair, amazing case but a tad expensive. http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Behuizingen_Big_Tower/Cooler_Master/HAF932_Advance/513020/? HAF 932, another large case with lots of features. http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Behuizingen_Mini_Tower/Lian_Li/PC-A05FNB/554455/? Lian Li A05, small but great airflow and sophistication. Also keep in mind there's absolutely nothing wrong with the HAF 922, the only reason I'm giving you more options is because HAF are overused (with reason though, good cases) and the HAF 922 on this website seems to be quite highly priced.
I understand, thanks for the list of cases, i will take a look at them and pick one. I am also stunned by the looks of the 650D, I have done some research on the case before and it seems amazing with all it features, i'll see how the other 2 compare to it, price/prestation wise. As for the HAF 922, you are right, the 932 is almost cheaper then the 922... Would the rest of the build be good now? With the PSU, RAM and CPU cooler etc.
You can also change to this motherboard if you wish. http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Moederborden_Socket_1155/GIGABYTE/GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3/557423/?tn=HARDWARE&l1=Moederborden&l2=Intel&l3=Socket+1155 same features, bit cheaper and looks better in my opinion. And yes the rest of the build is basically perfect.
Thanks for the alternative. Although I think I'll stay with the Asus for now, that is personal preference.
Fair enough.
About the R3, I looked it up (since I'm buying a new PC with that case too) and the Noctua does fit, although you have to watch out for RAM with heatsinks, as they might not fit. (nevermind, I'm late) Also yes, the airflow is not as good as some other cases, but you can replace the stock fans with better ones (or add a second fan to the front) for much better airflow.
It all fits Egonny, already been checked out.
Since i got a bit more to spend on a case i feel i should take the 650D, It looks better then any of the HAF cases in my opinion and it seems to have a ton of features. The Fractal R3 and XL are pretty yet i still have my doubts.

Slightly over budget but i guess I am finished. Time to order the parts?
If you want it to look extra classy and to save a few euros you can go with the H60: http://www.alternate.nl/html/summaryListing.html?searchCriteria=H60&cat1=091&cat2=296&cat3=000 You'll gain a couple degrees (or lose depending on quite a few factors) on the processor but it'll look classy.
Im not quite sure if i understand how the H60 works, I have seen some positive and negative things about the H60 on Facepunch, is it truly worth it? And then to get back on the motherboard you suggested, what are the diffrences compared to the one i picked, I personally prefered that one because its an Asus and it had an EFI bios. But since we are talking about pretty now, and an entire black motherboard, fancy cpu cooler and case would be awesome. Yet i don't want to lose much functionality for the looks.
With the H60 you have to think about the airflow, if your case has a roof exhaust as well as the rear one then the air will just take the easiest route out the roof rather than push through the tight fins of the radiator. Just noticed the 650D, which has a 200mm(?) roof fan so I would suggest against a H60, unless you entirely reverse the cases airflow so its coming in through the back, but then your GPU will suffer.
http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Moederborden_Socket_1155/ASUS/P8Z68-V/554563/?tn=HARDWARE&l1=Moederborden&l2=Intel cheaper and as far as I can see all you're losing is 2 SATA III ports (I highly doubt you'll be using 4 SSDs soon) and a expansion bracket for USB3 ports (still not a huge loss) [editline]10th August 2011[/editline] and don't touch closed loop watercooling like the H60
