Players from all over flock to EVO to compete and win big cash prizes in a variety of games. Super Smash Bros. Melee has been a staple at the event, but Nintendo never really acknowledged the competitive scene. E3 seemed to changed that perspective, as the Smash Bros Tournament there was a huge success and really showcased the competition had in the Smash community. Now it has been discovered that Nintendo is listed as a sponsor for this years EVO 2014, which takes place July 11th-13th at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino. Nintendo seems to be showing a level of embracing the competitive Smash community, which is always a good thing. For more info on EVO 2014 be sure to click here.
Nintendo is now sponsoring the biggest fighting game tournament in the world. After this and E3's small event, it's clear that they're finally acknowledging the competitive Smash scene.
Now Nintendo should make a competitive console
Now Nintendo should make a competitive console
They are the only major game/console company that actually gives a shit about local mp. Local/Lan MP is pretty much a requirement for high skilled competitive tourneys.
They only major game company that actually gives a shit about local mp.
Irrelevant? I love nintendo to death, but it's hard to take their recent hardware efforts seriously. They make due with what they have and still produce good games, but they shouldn't be putting that handicap on themselves in the first place.
Hell no. The console should stay where it is. It still is an impressive piece of hardware, and though it does not have the GRAFIX XTREEME AA X86 shit - it is genuinely a one of a kind experience of which I have more fun with. I never touch my Xbone or PS4 because it doesn't have genuine fun games but I've been pouring my heart and soul into my WU. Don't get me wrong, there are things that do bug me and the other two exceed in, and they both are the best consoles I have owned, but my Wii U is the funniest hands down.
The hardware doesn't make something sell, the games do. Hence why the Ouya is a good idea in concept, but doesn't have the backup of developers or a first party developer to give it games, hence why it flopped. You're saying that because the Wu is lacking in hardware that it is going to flop because you can't max AA and have as many particles n shit.

Also that is really good for Nintendo to be backing up the competitive scene. If they play their cards right and Sakurai listens to the right feedback, Nintendo can please both the Melee/Project M believers and the guys who liked some of the new mechanics that Brawl came with for Online play and such (Pull a Valve with CS:GO and the 1.6 crowd).

Me and my friends are all pitching in to buy a wii-u so we can play smash/mario cart/etc. None of us have any current gen consoles otherwise or plan on buying one.
what a huge turnaround from last year.
What handicap?
I'm guessing the handicap of Innovation, and not trying to make a mini-PC.
You're saying that because the Wu is lacking in hardware that it is going to flop because you can't max AA and have as many particles n shit.
It isn't an impressive piece of hardware at all. Not even the next gen consoles are that impressive in hardware tbh. What it does have is games that sell like hotcakes.
Considering Nintendo games always look great on the hardware they have I don't think it's a problem at all. And Nintendo games are often the first references I would go to when talking about games that don't degrade in quality and beauty over time because they don't strive to be super realistic. Little bit cartoonish, etc etc. I love it
Now Nintendo should make a competitive console
The irony in this statement is that with the announcement of the Gamecube-Wii U controller adapter, the Wii U is the only next-gen system with official wired controllers and thus the most competitively tournament-viable of the three. (Wireless controllers suffer from the interference caused by such large amounts of electronics, including other systems of the same kind, present in virtually all tournament settings. This was a huge worry for many Smash Bros players about SSB4 previously as interference is brutal on fighters due to the input lag or even misinterpretation it can cause).
To be fair a lot of fighting game players play with wired fight sticks over USB.
Most smash players use gamecube controllers.
Bitchin', I'm competing in EVO2014 for SSBM. I also did CEO as well.
I need to get a 3DS and/or a Wii U some time. I feel like I'm missing out on so much but I never get around to doing it.

It has an expansive library of GREAT titles, both new and classic. You'll find enough good games on the system to outweigh the cost of the handheld itself. As for the wii U, that's up to personal opinion. I got one within the past month and it really is a fantastic system. Yes, it needs more games, but its slowly getting them, and it has quite a few fun titles already. On top of that, the mario kart 8 bundle they released recently has tremendous value for what you pay. $360 for a console, mario kart 8, 1 free games (only good till july 31st), gamepad controller, wiimote controller, as well as charging accessories for the gamepad. Honestly, I wish nintendo would do more cross platform stuff like sony tries to do for the vita and playstation, but other than that, I love the 3DS and wii U.

Everyone has different opinions on the matter. I'm personally happy with the money I've spent.
nintendo is sponsoring a giant capcom advertisement? big news

Granted that's still somehow more than the Vita but still, if you don't like Nintendo's first party games I can't see much of a reason to get the 3DS or a Wii U. They are fine franchises, it just seems like Nintendo is allowed to get by being a little lazier than Sony and Microsoft.
