• Law Enforcement and Authority.

The above is a comment which was posted on a video of the London riots that took place last year along with many others talking about how they hate police. "Fuck the police" they said as they destroyed cars, threw bricks, and looted shops; sure it's a catchy hip-hop song, but would they still say things like this if there were no figures of authority? Who would be there to help us if there was no law enforcement? People use "police brutality" or "corruption" as an excuse to generalize and hate police. Sure, there have been cases where a police officer or a group of police officers have made mistakes, sometimes major ones, in fact there are quite a few assholes in the local police department where I live who stick their noses in just about everything young people do; but is that an excuse to have such a disgusting attitude towards all police? Anyway, this is just my opinion, I've never been in trouble with the police before, so I can't say I know what it's like to be arrested etc. What are your views on law enforcement? To what extent should we be controlled? (User was banned for this post ("Presenting an opinion/Asking a question" - Megafan))
Racial profiling is a very real thing that happens everyday in the United States. I remember this one time me and my friends went snooping around an old decrepit police shooting range. All the targets were caricatures of blacks and Hispanics (read: minorities) in "standard" gang paraphernalia. Patrick Dorismond, Oscar Grant, you can find dozens of similar cases. I get it, we are quick to say "lets not group all cops together" and "lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater", but there is something seriously fucked up, which I want to point out, which is that the law system is able to tolerate "a few bad apples" and not give a fuck when innocents are killed. We need to re frame our view on what we need protecting from to begin with. The cops are obviously failing horrendously with dealing with the gang problem, just as the government is laughably coping with the black problem, women problem, and so on. When I list problems, I want you to know that the names are aptly wrongly named with the blame being put on the wrong sources. Simply put: we don't have a poverty problem, because that is the byproduct of the real problem, we have a rich problem. We don't have a "terrorism" problem, we have an imperialism problem. As Prerna Lal eloquently puts it, "Thus, to millions of people, it is not the existence of the Other across the border that poses a security problem, but their own state that is a threat to security."
This is always a fun one. I agree with what you said, it's just an excuse to generalize and hate the police. Honestly, the argument that 'police officers are corrupt and power-hungry pigs' is a terrible one. I've said this in other threads concerning situations like this, really it's just a major stereotype. Of course this is more of an educated guess, and doesn't hold any statistical data, but the ratio of bad cops to good cops is probably about 1 to 90. Having worked with two departments, I can tell you most officers take their job seriously and really do care about the safety of the people. And often when things do seem over-the-top, it's taken out of context and made out to be something it really wasn't. I'm in no way defending the bad cops, they should lose their job and be legally charged if possible. I'm just saying people have the tendency to overreact. Like I said, it's a stereotype. It's no different than if I were to say that every black person must be a criminal. But I do agree, there is a problem with the system. Of course there's good officers and bad officers, quite frankly some of them do not deserve their job. I realize that, but it doesn't come down to specific individual officers and their position in the department, it's the entire system and process of law enforcement and many other things. For example, where I live, you can get a 64% on the entrance exam and still be qualified for the city's academy. Some people actually get in, too. Damn crazy, isn't it? It comes down to the selection process, training, etc. Instead of throwing tissues and NyQuil at the problem, let's treat the virus. Seriously, anyone who says "Fuck the police!" and means it is just a little twit using big boy words to make him feel like he has any beneficial worth in the world.
