I still play IL2 regularly. I just hope this isn't going to follow the absolutely awful Rise of Flight business model.
Didn't the company that made IL-2 already release a F2P flight sim in the form of War Thunder? I suppose that was more a spin-off of Wings of Prey than it was of IL-2, though. I guess this is aiming for a smaller, more focused, and possibly more realistic experience.
Not really for me, but I'm guessing lots of flight sim enthusiasts are excited about it.

Ah yes, because a flight simulator for hardcore enthusiasts needs a different payment model so the company doesn't lose money on their work, it's 'awful'.

Let me see if I can put this together correctly.
Birds of Prey by Gaijin Entertainment was a console-based flight sim put under the "IL-2 Sturmovik" name which was ported to PC (Wings of Prey) after popular demand. The company that was in charge of the IL-2 Sturmovik series is 1C, and the main developer who worked on that series was Oleg Maddox.
After Cliffs of Dover, Maddox left the team and is working with Eagle Dynamics to make a WWII variant for DCS:World. I do not know what happened to the rest of his team. I don't know whether they disintegrated or merged with the Rise of Flight team or took another path.
1C has the Rise of Flight team working on this new IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad title, and aside from it looking pretty good, I don't know too much about it.

?
The original IL-2 business model worked afaik. There's no need to sell cockpit lights separately for every single plane.
And microtransactions that are straight upgrades in an MP game are pretty awful, yeah.

WWII has a larger marketbase than WWI, so for RoF it was the best way for them to make money. I've gotten by just fine with the Iron Cross Edition anyway, plenty of good planes in that.
I hope they do go the Rise of Flight business model.
Unlock the game for all, free to play, but charge a small amount of money for aircraft. Not single aircraft, though. $5 for a handful of aircraft from a maker or something. Like the FW series, or the BF-109 G series or something along those lines.
That way instead of a $60 title, you could pay for just the aircraft you want to fly, with no more than $60 for all of them

The developers have already (correct me if they've change their stance since then) said they're not going to follow the RoF business model. They're going to focus on big expansion packs just like in the old IL-2 days of yore.
