• France's DCNS wins Australian A$50b, 12 submarine contract. Beats out Mitsubishi and Tussen Krupp
A French company has beaten competitors from Germany and Japan to secure the contract to build Australia's next fleet of submarines, with the Federal Government promising thousands of Australian jobs will be created. The much anticipated $50 billion contract has been settled in the febrile, pre-election period and ensures the 12 new submarines will be built at Adelaide's Osborne shipyards. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull flew to Adelaide to make the official announcement, confirming French company DCNS had won the bid to build a modified version of its nuclear submarine called the Shortfin Barracuda. He was flanked by his Defence Minister Marise Payne and local cabinet colleague Christopher Pyne, who holds a marginal South Australian seat. Mr Turnbull stressed the 12 submarines would be built in Adelaide and the project would create 2,800 Australian jobs. "This is a great day for our Navy, a great day for Australia's 21st century economy, a great day for the jobs of the future," Mr Turnbull said. "Australian built, Australian jobs, Australian steel, here right where we stand." Labor's defence spokesman Stephen Conroy described the decision as a "real victory for the people of Adelaide" but said it came after three years of "fake promises" from the Liberal Party.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-04-26/pm-announces-france-has-won-submarine-contract/7357462 I bet the Japanese are fuming. Abbott made a "captain's call" and awarded the contract to Mitsubishi without a tender and the public backlash led to offers being opened up to other companies. It was going to be Japan's first large foreign defence contract since the Second World War.
Woohoo
Talking about subs is better. Also. On the subject of french built subs. Why don't they build and design our subs like this? It was great platform before the treaty and could easily combine both our surface fleet and underwater fleet into a single class of ship.
Are we sure they will deliver because from what I've heard in France, things are starting to destabilize.
I see Abe is putting his ninjas to good use. Jokes aside, would you mind elaborating if possible? That sounds interesting. Edit: because it's a gimmick design that fulfills neither the role you would want out of a sub or a cruiser, the latter of which are outdated by now, I imagine.

I could be wrong and i'd love to find out the current state of things.
This doesn't bode well, they're basically trying to sell them a SSN converted into a conventional SSK. They haven't even finished building the first two of those SSNs for the French navy. So, they're looking to be looking at different standards of power availability for all the onboard systems when your power comes from a pair of diesels and a bank of batteries rather than a permanently available nuclear pile. This brings some wariness towards DCNS's claim of 'the most powerful sonar fitted to be a conventional submarine'. I mean, I could be wrong, I'm just a silly armchair admiral whom reads a fair bit, but well, this is a class that hasn't even floated one regular unit and already it's been sliced up for political reasons. At least the Japanese option had years of operational experience behind it.

-snip let's talk about submarines- Btw yes we built the Surcouf. One badass submarine for sure ! Even today, [T]http://img10.hostingpics.net/pics/858163SNLE_Le_Terrible.jpg[/T] We don't joke with submarines :v:

Because as any submarine you don't know its there until they surface. Also, Its good to know theses are gonna be built in Adelaide.
Why do we need submarines again? [editline]26th April 2016[/editline] Like planes and vehicles I get cause we do ground stuff around the world and they're useful for non-combat stuff, but wtf are we going to do with subs?

It also has the advantage of only being a direct economic threat to a potential enemy rather than an existential threat making it more difficult to fault geopolitically.
Wait... that says le terrible on the side?
You would think the translation would be better but its "the terrible"
at least it'll stop the boats
Wait... that says le terrible on the side?
Haha French subs are terrible No but seriously, the 'old' definition of terrible is something that strikes fear into others.

Honestly it's just power projection, some of them will probably end up hanging out near Chinese waters to keep North Korea and China in check due to Australia's reliance on that region being hospitable for trade relations. Regardless I'm glad for more allies investing in their own military autonomy, though pretending that creating a few thousand jobs is an economic bonus to spending 50 billion on military hardware is a practice we'd be better off without. It's a money sink through and through, whether it'll be worth the investment, only the future can tell.
I just hope this doesn't end up like the Scorpene-class scandals that have happened in both India and Malaysia. I also hope that these subs don't end up like the ones we're replacing them with. A co-worker of mine was an civilian-contracted maintenance welder for the RAN down in Sydney and told me about how ASC rushed shoddy welded hulls into service to save costs and how he was contracted to fix all of these, even though it shouldn't have been a problem in the first place.
Text
If its that bad then why not get robots to weld it?

It's 2016 man.

(while underwater) Building a sub like that would be a regression. That sub would be useless today. [editline]26th April 2016[/editline] If your boat has to surface to attack, it's pretty much crap. (I do admire the Surcouf, though.)
Text

Text
Did you both think i was suggesting that we build a submarine from the 1920's? I was just suggesting making something like a destroyer submersible then give it torpedo tubes and make the turret mounted on the front able to fire underwater and because it could fire underwater you could be any angle and fire at the bottom of the enemies hull. Like this. [t]http://i.imgur.com/R1iWetS.jpg[/t]
