• Steam refusing to show servers on WiFi.

So today I moved into residence at university, and an old problem of mine popped up. On my laptop, for whatever reason, any Steam game refuses to show any servers, at all. Even games that don't use the steam server browser refuse to show any servers. I had this problem on my laptop before on my original home network, yet just fiddling around with Steam and deleting clientregistry.blob countless times eventually fixed it. However, I'm having the exact problem now. I can use a cable to get servers, however the actual non-wifi internet is horribly slow and I get pings of around 300+. My laptop is an Asus G53SW-A1.
Tell us the router model you're connecting to.
It is an Atheros AR9002WB-1NG, however I don't have access to the ports. I have noticed that it also prevents logging in on certain other programs, while not others. And it isn't like they're being blocked, as they're regular programs, like an internet phone. Somehow they work with the horrible wired connection but games are unplayable on that due to ridiculous pings. The WiFi is ludicrously powerful and is connected perfectly. It seems to SOMETIMES work however, as I got servers to show up briefly, and play, however it crapped out after about 20 minutes and didn't work again.
I've had similar problems with Wireless networks and Steam games. It took a long time to find the answer, and this is the only one I could come up with. Sounds like the server list is flooding the router, making it impossible for you to see or connect to servers. Even if that's not the case, it seems like there's some setting somewhere in the router you don't have access to. If it's the former, the only fix is to buy a new router. If it's the later, speak with your system administrator and ask permission to look at the settings.
Hmm, it seems the cable'd internet is working fine now, however I get extremely bad connection times in Bad Company 2 now for whatever reason. Only that game, odd. I Never had this problem before.
Probably blocked, with some packets getting threw.
Okay, this is weird, a LOT of games are now randomly unplayable laggy, while others are fine. Games like Monday Night Combat, Bad Company 2, Borderlands and Bioshock 2 are lag fests, while a lot of others play like they are fine, and the internet is fine, 1.1 meg a second download etc.
Some games are more "sensitive" to slow internetz, also there might be alot traffic at the moment when you are trying to play. There's a big chance the school is using a proxy, so I advice you to find a proxy passthrough program.
It is really confusing though, it seems to be completely random.
Ugh, it seems to be almost everything now is blocked on the wifi, except it is now blazing fast. (When I mean blocked, I mean like failing to connect etc.) On my LAN connection, I can connect to everything, but it's pretty slow, and other than CS:S, TF2 and Garry's Mod, the games are completely unplayable, with ludicrous pings.
