(CNN) - For more than a month, a U.S. Marine and Afghanistan war veteran has been held in a Tijuana, Mexico, prison, fighting for his release after being charged with a crime he says he did not commit.
Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi said he accidentally crossed into Mexico around 10 p.m. on March 31 with three personal firearms while on his way to meet friends in San Ysidro, California.
Tahmooressi, 25, had recently moved to the area to get treatment for his post-traumatic stress disorder and was "essentially living out of his truck," his mother, Jill, told CNN.
He is currently being held in the La Mesa penitentiary in Tijuana on a weapons charge and awaits a May 28 court date, according to the Mexican attorney general's office.
"I accidentally drove into Mexico with 3 guns ... a rifle (AR-15), a .45 cal pistol and a 12 gauge pump shotgun with no intensions (sic) on being in Mexico or being involved in any criminal activities," Tahmooressi wrote in a statement of innocence to U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter. "I have rights to all 3 weapons. They are under my name ... Please help me."
http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/08/justice/us-marine-mexico-prison/
Well that's a shitty turn of events.
are there no signs on the road saying atleast "yo dude you're going to mexico what the fuck"
are there no signs on the road saying atleast "yo dude you're going to mexico what the fuck"
There is, but it was night and the sign graffitied over, and he was relatively new to the area. It was a one way road so he couldn't turn around.

What the hell kind of asshole graffitis a road sign
There is, but it was night and the sign graffitied over, and he was relatively new to the area. It was a one way road so he couldn't turn around.
wow, that's really shitty luck
-snip-
I'm curious how he managed to do that, unless it was night, since most border crossings are huge checkpoints with clear warnings. I have only been to major checkpoints in Texas, however, so maybe there are inconspicuous bridges that have no signage, but I remain skeptical.
What's the point of saying he has rights to those weapons, anyway? Riling up some gun nuts? You're still in Mexico and your rights to those guns don't apply there. And you're in the Marines, how the hell did you have so little awareness of your surroundings, especially if you could presumably afford a phone or GPS. And you should be able to read a damn map if you're in the military!
I though the US and Mexico have a big fence between them?

From what i understand, San Diego has a lot of roads that go directly to border crossings. He was stopped at a standard crossing and arrested. And it was night.
I though the US and Mexico have a big fence between them?
nah, there's various stretches of fences in high traffic areas but there's also tons of spots with nothing since a lot of the border is just empty desert, there's probably even several spots without signage
I though the US and Mexico have a big fence between them?
Not in most places, but he was stopped AT the fence, not deep inside Mexico.

Means he's not a felon and can lawfully possess them.
Dunno what the big deal is, if it was an accident just escort him back across the border and be done with it, better for everyone that way.

That's a shame they didn't just turn him around, and I can't imagine having to spend time in a Mexican jail.
I wonder what would happen to a Mexican national caught with guns at our checkpoint. Would we detain them and deport them? Or would there be any charges and jail time in a US prison?
Not in most places, but he was stopped AT the fence, not deep inside Mexico.
so why the hell did they arrest him? if they were legally his guns, shouldn't they have just turned him away from crossing rather than arrest him?

Imagine if a Mexican dude crossed US border with three firearms. He would be shot dead instantly.

It's easy to tell you're not from the United States to blatantly throw out stupid shit posting arguements like that. We Americans may like our guns, and the general hurr hurr fuck Mexico shit may be thrown around a lot, but we aren't all crazed psychopaths with guns looking to kill whoever we can. Worst case, if a Mexican crossed with firearms, and was stopped, if found he'd be detained/arrested, unless he had the legal documents allowing him to own and possess said firearms.
How come he can legally own guns if he has PTSD?

Yeah, chances are the Mexican would be treated the same way this American is being treated. Doesn't make it right though, and it's all unnecessary unless there is reasonable suspicion that the person is actually up to no good, how does it help anyone to detain that person for what usually amounts to an extended period of time? Just turn them around and send them home.
Sounds like Delta Farce
That border crossing is famous for being a bitch to move around through.

I know from experience that getting in to Mexico is way faster than getting out.

Surely THIS wasn't the border crossing he accidentally went through, wasn't it?
This is the San Ysidra border crossing, the busiest in the world, and it's heavily signed.

Where does it say he has PTSD?
Where does it say he has PTSD?
In the article.

Oh god dammit
Welp that's what I get for skimming shit

You're stupid, not everyone with PTSD is a crazed maniac.
You're stupid, not everyone with PTSD is a crazed maniac.
Seems like quite the liability to me. Doesn't take a whole lot to set someone off with serious PTSD.
Edited: And no not everyone with PTSD is an accident waiting to happen but there are without a doubt cases of it where firearms probably don't mesh well.

ptsd has different kinds of forms. ptsd =/= instant rampaging murderer.
Imagine if a Mexican dude crossed US border with three firearms. He would be shot dead instantly.
I mean, sure, if he was brandishing all three and about to shoot someone. But if he happened to accidentally drive his car up to the border with his guns in the back seat and no intention to use them he wouldn't be shot unless he tried to use them.
I though the US and Mexico have a big fence between them?
nah, mostly empty desert and natural formations like big ole rivers and mountains create a natural border
