You would be forgiven for thinking that since Obama became president in 2008, the US had finally conquered the racism that had blighted its history for so long. You would be totally wrong – while a black face in the white house is quite a big deal, and while all the signs are that everyone is fine with that – it wasn’t until last month that the States finally shook itself free of its race-riven past. The federal appeals court in Atlanta is what drove the final conciliatory nail into the coffin of division at last, when it cast its judgment on a racial discrimination case. Yes, for the third emphatic time, the Eleventh Circuit Court ruled that there were no racial connotations when a white supervisor repeatedly called an adult black man “boy”. The court decided once and for all, bravely even gainsaying the Supreme Court, that John Hithon, a black man passed repeatedly over for low-level management after 13 years at an Alabama chicken processing plant, had not been discriminated against racially. They made this decision even after he testified about his white boss’ habit of calling black employees ‘boy’, and the fact that he kept appointing white guys from other plants. It may be tricky for a British audience to appreciate the gravity of this ruling. In this context, the word ‘boy’ used to have appalling racial overtones. When white people called black people boy before this ruling, it evoked explicit reference to slavery, when it was how people would refer to their black ‘house-boys’. It used to be a term of racial belittlement, infantilising and emasculating – especially in the South, which has had the lion’s share of racial disunity. Now though, these connotations have been washed away in the cleansing rain of this landmark ruling, and the word is at last reclaimed. The court’s decision builds on sterling work by another American post-racial pioneer: former radio host Dr Laura Schlessinger, a famous talk radio host. Dr Laura, famed both for her forthright conservative viewpoint and for shooting from the hip, made her stand for racial harmony last month, when she courageously used the ‘n-word’ 11 times live on air in a conversation with an African-American calling her show for some advice. This caused a huge stink, and Schlessinger, cheeks streaked with crocodile tears, was eventually forced to resign, a martyr to Liberal Orthodoxy. Of course, the witch hunt against her missed the point; she wasn’t being wilfully and provocatively racist towards a vulnerable caller receiving genuinely upsetting racist abuse from friends of her husband, she was exercising her First Amendment rights to free speech and bracing dialogue. Viz: “Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO, listen to a black comic, and all you hear is nigger, nigger, nigger. “I don’t get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it’s a horrible thing; but when black people say it, it’s affectionate. “We’ve got a black man as president, and we have more complaining about racism than ever. I mean, I think that’s hilarious.” Hithon and Schlessinger are but two examples of a canker at the heart of modern life in America. Racism like this still exists across the country, and though conservatives are at pains to deny it, they’re often most to blame, with disingenuous attempts to reclaim ugly words and deny the need for affirmative action, as though the very fact that one black guy has made it into a top job is enough to absolve the entire country of its problems. Hithon’s lawyers are yet to decide whether to escalate the issue. Dr Laura is, mercifully, without a job, even though Sarah Palin came through for her via Twitter: Dr.Laura: don’t retreat … reload! (Steps aside bc her 1st Amend.rights ceased 2exist thx 2activists trying 2silence”isn’t American, not fair”) If you were struggling to decrypt those words, that was Sarah Palin asking Dr Laura to ‘reload’ – i.e. be racist again. I digress. And for some final food for thought, if you were wondering about whether “boy” truly is used inappropriately by white guys, here is a US Representative (an MP) from Kentucky using it in reference to his own president.
Source: http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2010/09/09/america-enters-its-first-truly-%E2%80%98post-racial-age/

This is bullshit, America's been low on discrimination for a good while now, minus the republican stuff. America fucks up a lot of things, but they've been pretty stable on that point for the last ten years.
USA all the way
it wasn’t until last month that the States finally shook itself free of its race-riven past.
Racism is over now?
Best pun I seen so far, OP. Good job.

Ignoring racism is supposed to be post-racial?
Ignoring racism is supposed to be post-racial?
And that's how it works...until someone attacks a mass group of other skinned people and i forgot where i was going with this.
Unfortunately, so long as there are social republicans, there will be racism in the USA.
Riiiiiiight. Because there are totally zero racist democrats.
I love how everyone says the United States is still a backwater racist country when Great Britain has a racism going on all the time with it's large Muslim community. Every country has racism. It's the twenty-first century, and the United States isn't any worse than any other country anymore.
Great Britain has a racism going on all the time with it's large Muslim community.
you fucking kidding me right forget racism against the muslims, try racism against the irish
Unfortunately, so long as there are social republicans, there will be racism in the USA.
I know that, but they lack the power to make any radical changes that discriminates race without getting chased in the streets. [editline]05:51AM[/editline]
you fucking kidding me right forget racism against the muslims, try racism against the irish
:toughguy: 'doose feckin' teaswillers...
I guess we can just do away with Affirmative action now.
I guess we can just do away with Affirmative action now.
just because a dude announced that we are post-racial, it does not mean that all the black people can move away from projects
Regardless, Affirmative Action is stupid and should be done away with.
This is a blog post, not news.
Why is an opinion piece being listed here as News?
EVERY REPUBLICAN IS A BIGOT APPARENTLY c
Won't be over... Ever. Until people quit being bitches about language. Also, yeah sure the white people aren't keeping the black people down... But you know what? White people are keeping white people down, to make the black people "happy". I am paying full tuition for my schooling, didn't qualify for any money. I have a black friend who was OFFERED a free ride, not because they were smart, or gifted. Nope, because they were BLACK. The university even said they would put them in black living to make them feel more comfortable. Yeah, bull shit.
This thread is full of bigots.
Racism is so much out of my thoughts I thought you were trying to show you were german or something in the thread title instead of LOL KKK.

[editline]07:24PM[/editline] Also, what is with opinion pieces passing as news? Has facepunch become daft?
