Nice they didn't try to shoehorn in a gimmick, though I still think the pad has underutilized potential.
The Wii U needs a Zelda or Mario or some third-party game that will use the Gamepad in amazing ways and break those perceived limitations to other developers. Would also prefer for this revolution to not happen at the end of the console's lifespan, a la Skyward Sword.
the wiiu needs to get rid of the gamepad

That'd be a really bad idea, the gamepad is what makes the Wii U different; it gives you a new way to play things.
I think they handled the screen perfectly for this. Honestly, DKC would not benefit from dual screen action as a 2.5D platformer, so having the screen be off-TV play-capable with no real drawbacks is the best usage for it.

Well, Sonic: Lost World operated the bottom screen as a way to show progress through a level, how to activate your extra-related stuff and Wisp Powers. Super Mario 3D World just shows you exactly what's happening on your TV at the same time. I think either showing the game or progress through the stage could make some passive use, but meh.
As long as I can still do off screen play I don't mind too much
If it has no functional use I can see this continuing in the future as devs try to take as much out of the hardware as possible

that would leave it as pretty much an upgraded 360, so now

If they got rid of the gamepad then what would've been the point in making a new console
I think they should put lives and stuff on the gamepad at least. A blank one sounds... off.
This reminds me of Dreamcast games that wouldn't use the VMU for anything useful.
Mortal Kombat Gold initally didn't even have a logo, like most games would, it just showed a picture of a VMU.
