• Puppy Linux - A simple Low resource OS for old PC's
    30 replies, posted
Puppy linux is an OS that is easy to use, simple, and not hardware taxing (unlike ubuntu (Which in my opinion I find to be getting bloated for a linux distro)) Puppylinux is even less taxing than xubuntu, and can be used on a 200 mhz pc with 64 megs of ram minimum (That's a live CD or full install) Simply put, it's a great low taxing distro, or an emergency live cd rescue system. Puppy linux can be booted from the following:
A USB flash drive/keydrive or any other bootable USB storage device (flash-Puppy) A CD-ROM (live-Puppy), with six flavours to choose from. A Zip drive or LS-120/240 SuperDisk (zippy-Puppy) An internal hard drive (hard-Puppy) A computer network (thin-Puppy) An emulator (emulated-puppy) A floppy boot disk that loads the rest of the operating system from a USB drive, CD-ROM, or internal hard drive
Keep in mind, that in order to run something with Puppy linux, you only need to click the icon ONCE, double clicking like windows will open it twice. Puppy linux is the only OS that will actually run off of a live CD on my ancient machine (cyrix 250 mhz cpu, 128 megs of ram, radeon 7000). The base install of puppy linux uses about 60 megs of ram, which is surprisingly low. So yes, it does run on a 64 megsabyte system fully, and it also manages to squeek by using the installed seamonkey web browser. Recently Puppy linux (3 and 4) have had added support for slackware. There are MULTIPLE different iso disks made on the official puppy linux forums, many with different packages and different environments. Compiz fusion currently does NOT work with puppy linux 4, unless you have an xfce, KDE, or GNOME, but it's being worked on right as we speak by a member of the forums. It sort of works in xfce with Puppy linux 4, so just be patient guys! If you must view this guys progress on porting it to puppy linux 4, the thread can be found here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=22236 Ok, now with that out of the way, we can choose what you want. You can go with the standard puppy linux 4 (This is what I went with, seemed like the perfect amount of stuff came with it) ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/puppy-4.00-k2.6.21.7-seamonkey.iso Or puppy linux 3.01 (Don't know why you would choose this over puppy linux 4) http://coblitz.codeen.org/distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/puppy-3.01-seamonkey.iso Or, you would use NOP (It's an office install, so it comes with things like the opera suite (with flash) installed, open office, and gimp and such. It's also based on puppy linux 4!) http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=233977386&t=29031 There's also the puppy linux barebones, this comes with no packages pre installed, except ones that you need. It comes with the dillo web browser though. http://puppylinux.org/wiki/archives/old-wikka-wikki/categoryderivative/barebones Then there's vestapup. This is a vista clone, it's an install of about 455 megabytes, but it's pretty cool. It uses about 200 megs of ram idle, but still has some pretty cool things, it has the sidebar and gadgets (widgets) It uses the xfce desktop environment, and has compiz fusion built in, and has all the drivers you need right from startup. Hoever, yet again, this one is based on puppy linux 3.01. In vestapup, you have to double click the icons in order to open them up, unlike in regular puppy linux 3 or 4. http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads/puplets/vestapup I suggest using puppy linux 4 (the regular non-modded version) INSTALLATION Now, how to install it. You download the ISO, and mount it using magic iso, or whatever you want to use, then follow this step by step guide (when at the part where you choose xorg or xvesa, try xorg, if it doesn't work try xves, xvesa does NOT have hardware acceleration, so ONLY use xvesa if you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO). This is a guide to getting a full install to an empty HDD. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29653 If you follow this guide step by step, you should have a working installation of puppy linux 4. You also notice that this has an option to choose what partition you boot from, by default this is puppy linux 4. Now, if you want to skip this, here's something you can do.

Click "file" icon on your desktop
hold control, and press 'h' this will unhide all of the hidden folders
click the up arrow to go up to your file system
go into your boot folder
go into your grub folder
Click on "menu.lst"
Towards the top, there should be something that says "#timeout 30"
Get rid of the "#" (this is a comment), and change the 30 to 5
This will make puppy linux 4 boot in 5 seconds if you haven't chosed an option in the GRUB. Now for some useful tips and packages. DRIVER SETUP Nvidia Since this is for old systems, one of the forum members (at the puppy linux forums, not FP) made a .pet package for the legacy nvidia drivers (to use compiz fusion, you must have at LEAST a geforce 2) For nvidia, you can download this package, this will install your legacy drivers all in one go http://files.filefront.com/NVIDIA+964301+k26217pet/;8686807;/fileinfo.html Here's packages for riva TNT through geforce 1: http://download.tuxfamily.org/nop/NVIDIA-718601-k2.6.21.7.pet Packages for geforce 2 - geforce 4 series: http://download.tuxfamily.org/nop/NVIDIA-964301-k2.6.21.7.pet Packages for geforce 5 - geforce 8 series: http://download.tuxfamily.org/nop/NVIDIA-100.14.19-k2.6.21.7.pet That's the simplest way to do it, of course this will only work for certain cards, so if you have something newer than like a geforce 8 series, then you are going to want to go to the nvidia site and get those ones, it requires a bit more dinking around, but it should be simple enough (if you have something newer than that why would you use puppy linux anyway?) ATI Now, if you have something newer than or equal to a radeon 8500, then just go to the ATI site and get those drivers, HOWEVER, I had a radeon 7000 (in my oldest computer, the one i mentioned earlier) and it didn't have radeon 7000 drivers for linux. Fortunately, puppy linux has support for it, in their built in drivers. To enable these, Unhide the folders (ctrl + h), and navigate to the root/.etc/.x11/xorg.conf Open xorg.conf in a text editor and add this:
Section "Device" Driver "radeon" EndSection
somewhere in the xorg.conf, reboot and see if that helps. (REMEMBER, in xvesa, this will not work because there is NO HARDWARE ACCELERATION) USEFUL PACKAGES Pet-BE-Gone This will remove pet packages (you can do this via the package manager, but pet-be-gone allows you to remove packages BUILT INTO the iso that you installed, so you can get rid of seamonkey if you want to (i don't suggest doing this since it uses SUCH little RAM) Link: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=17035 WINE This is the easiest way to install WINE 1.0 (sadly not 1.1.1), you can via the wine-hq and getting a slackware package, but it is missing some dependencies. This pet includes the 1.0, and all of the dependencies. and works quite well. However, if you just NEED that newer version, just go to the wine hq and get a slackware package. To run an EXE in puppy linux via wine, just right click the exe, and click "Open with", then click "Wine" Link: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=26717 More Games This has a list of like 20 fun small games (like less that 1 mb per game, easy install as a .pet package. Link: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=233977386&t=29050 VLC Media Player

After it's done installing, right click, and go to shutdown all the way at the bottom
Click "restart X server" link: http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/ttuuxxx/programs/multimedia/vlc-0.8.6h-engv5.pet
How to make it the default media player: Just download this: Link: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=11252 Opera 9.51

download the package http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/opera-9.51.pet
Install the package
Reboot the X server
Opera 9.51 should now be in the internet menu of your right click. Opera 9.51 spell checker

Download the package http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/spellchecker_addon.pet
Install the package
reboot the X server
Now opera 9.51 has a spell checker also! Firefox 3 This is a simple installation .pet file for firefox 3, this will install firefox 3 just by running this file. http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/firefox-3.0.pet Azureus 3.0.5.2 This is the popular azureus bittorrent client http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/azureus-3.0.5.2.pet Gimp 2.6.4 A popular image editor, considered to be one of the best free ones, all in a .pet package http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/gimp-2.4.6.pet Filezilla 3.0.10 This is a popular FTP client for uploading/downloading files to your FTP server. http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/filezilla-3.0.10.pet Skype 2.0.0.63 This is a popular VOIP client for talking to other people online via microphone, also can make phone calls bia microphone to cell and/or landline phones for a small cost. http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/skype-2.0.0.63.pet Teamspeak 2.0.32.60 Another voip talking thing, support for microphones of course, great for playing games. http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/teamspeak_client-2.0.32.60.pet Transmission 1.22 Another bittorrent client like azureus. http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/transmission-1.22.pet ZSNES 1.51 I believe this is a Super nintendo emulator for puppy linux http://puppylinux.ca/tpp/bugs/zsnes-1.51.pet Drives The easiest way to access them is this:

Right click on desktop
Go to the desktop menu, and click "Hotpup desktop Drive Icons"
Select what drives you want to show up on the desktop
Click them once to open up the drive
SETTING UP ADITIONAL DRIVERS This is so fucking easy to set up network drivers and such on linux. Sound drivers

right click on the desktop
Click "ALSA Sound Wizard"
It will search for a sound card, and it will find yours
Choose your sound card
Click "OK"
It will play a test sound
Either it will work or it won't, MOST OF THE TIME, it will work
Click OK again, and it will load the correct driver every time on bootup
Network Drivers

right click on the desktop
Click "Network wizard"
Click the "eth0" button you see (if you use a USB dongle for internet, click "autoload USB" or "load Module"
Click "Test Eth0"
If it says "Puppy was able to find a live network" Then click "Auto DHCP"
It will find a DHCP server
Either it will work or it won't, MOST OF THE TIME, it will work
If it works, Click "Yes"
Click done
VERY rarely will it not work. Slackware Support A lot of slackware can be downloaded in a .tar.gz format, puppy can easily convert this to a usable extension for a package. You simply use the console and type "tgz2pet *link to tar.gz goes here*. This converts the tar.gz to a .pet format and then you click the .pet like normal and install the package. I kind of feel like dual booting this on my XP/Ubuntu PC, since I haven't actually booted into Ubuntu in over 6 months...I miss Compiz Fusion
Added list of easy install .pets for drivers for almost every cards excluding GTX 200 series and geforce 9 series to OP. They we're made for 3.01, but should work in puppy linux 4 since they use the same kernel so they most likely work in puppy linux 4 Also added opera 9.51 packages to OP Also added in how to use the slackware tgz converter
Wow, this seems to be a lot better than Ubuntu.
I just got diablo 2 working on puppy linux using wine. Runs great.
I love that little thing too. But I often use remastered versions - others than the ones you listed there - or remaster Puppy myself.
Added more to useful packages list: firefox 3 azureus bittorrent client Gimp Image editor Filezilla FTP client Skype VOIP client Teamspeak VOIP client Transmission bittorrent client ZSNES emulator Edit: Also, what remastered versions do you use drdaxxy?
I don't really often use Puppy anymore since I don't have any old computers that would need it (well, one, but I'd need an even lighter distribution to do the things I want to do with it), but back in the 3.0 days I used PizzaPup. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=15374
Nice find. I love low-resource Linux distros. XFCE F.T.W!
Wow that's small.
I like the puppy icon It's cute :excited:
No pictures, no download. That's my rule of thumb for linux - why go through all that shit if you aren't happy with the end product?
No pictures, no download. That's my rule of thumb for linux - why go through all that shit if you aren't happy with the end product?
that's a fucking dumb rule. that's almost as daft as people changing distro for a different WM.
Added pictures to bottom of post.
Compiz-fusion for puppy 4 test package released, check it out guys! Should I switch to this from Ubuntu if Ubuntu runs a little slow on my PC? It runs decently but not smoothly.
Should I switch to this from Ubuntu if Ubuntu runs a little slow on my PC? It runs decently but not smoothly.
Is that with or without compiz and stuff, because if it doesn't run well without compiz then you should consider a more lightweight OS, take your pick.
With and without, running with Compiz and lots of effects barely makes it slowdown, but without it's still kind of choppy/not smooth.
Isn't that what people do on forums? PS: naps are great!
Lol, I know. Here, have some :downs::downs::downs:
Updated VLC part, the new .pet package is easier to install.
Nice little distro, I might look into installing this on an old box.
I installed Puppy onto my old Tecra, but I has question How does I change resolutionz
The resolution is changed after you go into xorg or xvesa, if you choose xorg on install, it lists some resolutions in the non gui portion of the install before you install or boot from the live cd. In xvesa, you choose xvesa and then once you're in the live cd you choose the resoltion. You can also go to the puppy menu, and click "xorg video wizard" in setup or "xvesa video wizard"
Her, puppy 4.1 released, changelog here: http://puppylinux.com/download/release-4.1.htm some bigger changes made: • faster boot • moved to the 2.6.25.16 kernel, there is a retro download for really old PC's that has the 2.6.21.7 kernel which is more suitable for older hardware, The older kernel is configured with the old IDE drivers (instead of PATA) • More drivers are pre packaged now, and has better hardware detection • tons of bug fixes. download: http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads/official-releases/puppy-linux-41
I know this thread has been around for a while, but I thought it was worth mentioning. My Girlfriend is currently studying a Philosphy course part time while she works full-time. She is usually either on her Desktop (Pimped) an old Laptop (Shit) or One of 3 Work Desktops that all run windows 2000 barely and suck balls. So I set her up a custom version of puppy with the pup_save file on a 4GB USB stick (it originally booted from the USB stick too but some of the older PCs just couldn't do it)and a specific rollout of software. So regardless of where she is, she can 'hijack' one of the PCs and instantly turn it into her Course PC with her date planner, Open Office saved websites, identical software. and all her work stored exactly as she left it without having to jump through hoops for different OS's and different software versions. The Drive also has 300mb of NFTS just incase she needs to communicate with a windows PC, almost like a sort of transfer partition. Which both OS's can read. Puppy seriously comes into it's own with this sort of stuff. It adapts to any situation hardware-wise and it has only needed tinkering with once and that was to use Ndiswrapper on a PCMIA wireless card, that she (being a pretty big linux noob) figured out herself anyway. Score!
