Joystiq reports that these domains would replace the current abbreviation model. Instead of visiting xbox.com or playstation.com, for example, you would visit a site that ends in .xbox or .playstation.
That sounds like an interesting idea.
Aren't top level domains supposed to be categories, not brand names??

It could still be used as categories with this brand name model, it'd would just more narrow.
Woot!

I don't like this honesty. It just means that companies can easily get an 'e-monopoly' on a specific product. For example .food or .pc

.steam old work well, using the name of a game for its store page so like www.arma2.steam
branded names like ".live," ".bing," and ".windows" from Microsoft
They shouldn't be allowed all of these, just use .microsoft or something.

Fucking really?
how are they gonna name their mainpage domain?
http://main.xbox
I think I'd rather visit
http://xbox.com or something
how are they gonna name their mainpage domain?

xbox.xbox :v:
This just feels really odd to me. If it falls through I'm guessing everyone would go to the same exact domain name they've always been going to only to be redirected to some "easier" name.
xbox.xbox :v:
This is what's bugging me. When I want to search for something am I gonna have to go to google.google? How are these companies going to rename their main pages to sound less stupid?
Am I the only one who's fine with .com and .net, and such staying the way they are? .xbox and .sony just sounds stupid.
xbox.xbox :v:
www.xbox
Why not just www.steam/arma2 ? I don't see a problem with that.
I thought just a few days ago everybody and their grandmother on FP were against these and thought they were stupid.

we still are

The url would just be "xbox" :v:
Dunno about anyone else but I REALLY don't like this
You all seem confused to how the DNS system works. You don't need a domain, they can very easily do stuff like:
http://steam/arma2 or http://xbox/login etc..
This would stop retards registering fake domains like "xbox720.com" I guess.
Instead the official one would be "720.xbox"

I think you're the one confused, you can't visit http://com/ or http://org/ can you? They are TLD extensions.

That's because they're not used, the DNS system can implement them easily though.
Aren't top level domains supposed to be categories, not brand names??
xbox could be considered a category that holds games, kinect, live, marketplace, FAQs ect
That sounds like an interesting idea.
It'd certainly free up some confusion for certain domains. I can think of a few instances where visiting halo.xbox would be advantageous over halo.com.
Well, now it's halo.xbox.com and bungie.net isn't relevant, but the idea still stands.

Not anymore

Agreed with this, though. It'd be simple to just have search.bing or mail.live.

Why? There is no reason other than you're used to it
In other news, Apple patents ".com" domains.
Thousands of companies facing legal action.
