In an interview posted to the crimea.ua news site one of the journalists attacked stated; "We were sitting in a restaurant when masked gunmen entered the building opposite and began to take out the equipment."This was clearly television studio equipment. I quickly took a few photos on my phone, as they carried the equipment. One of the masked men approached me, put me on the ground, put a gun to his head to me and just took my phone and my friend's camera.
"Then they returned to the van, the vehicle had no licence plate, and they left."
He added; "Here now, the military situation there is no law. People who do this, clearly are not subject to any laws."
This keeps happening with varying levels of severity. The camera man that VICE are using for their despatches was grabbed by the neck a few days ago while people demanded they stop filming, and then in their latest one a "Crimea self defence" person demanded they stop filming.
It also seems that a lot of the media are getting harassed by (mostly women) "normal" people and told to stop filming, again in one of the VICE reports a woman tried to take the press pass of the reporter.
Its a very strange situation, it seems that they are determined to prevent the media from reporting.

Nothing strange about it. Would you want to be filmed betraying your own country?

Own country? Those are Russians who are invading Ukraine who are trying to hide their shit.

I was referring to the pro-Russian Crimean paramilitaries but yes, obviously the Russians are trying to avoid coverage as well.
Well I guess Dale didn't think it through

the funny thing is that's literally the logic they're trying to use
I wonder if this would have happened if the guy was with a news network from a powerful country. Most of these incidents seem to be against people who are Slavic or from smaller countries, yet larger news networks aren't being harassed like this.
Of course that theory would go right out the window if they rough up an American journalist with CNN or something. Still, it seems like they're picking on "easy targets" just because they can.

The best part is that these guys could even kill the journalist, and no one would have the balls to do anything about it
When you're hiding what you're doing from the rest of the world with violence, surely you must know what you're doing is wrong
Do these people genuinely think they are morally right?

Russians didn't conquer 1/6 of the Earth's surface by being morally right
While the whole deal really chaps my hide, there's something so very disgruntling about that one asshole who just slapped the reporter on the head before taking off. Was that slap really necessary?(rhetorical question but still...)

I'm not keen on Russia's History, but didn't they just walk in and claim all the land that nobody was using, like Canada? Isn't the vast majority crammed up in Europe, some cities on the East Coast, and then 80% woods and frozen tundra?

That's Siberia. Most of everything in the European part has been conquered. Southern regions are all conquered.

Oh, I wondered what happened to her, she used to be an anchor on Australian TV.
Reporting from Crimea sure is an improvement from hosting Today Tonight.
