Kind of a dick move, but one can understand their desperation. I still would not have done that though. Anybody know how the game is?
I don't think potential backers should care whether a game will be on Steam or not though.
Regardless if people should or should not care, some do; more to the point, they were selling their game as more than it is. Recall, this is before greenlight and what not, so being on Steam meant more than just availability, it meant that Valve viewed the game as being good enough to be on Steam, or at the very least the situation could be interpreted as such.
I don't think potential backers should care whether a game will be on Steam or not though.
I'll admit a game being on Steam is a big factor for me, more so if it uses any kind of Steam integration (Steamworks etc) Mainly because I have so many games on Steam now that I just like to keep them all in one place. I don't want to have to go back in a year+ time and have to track down all my details to play a game instead of just logging into Steam and re-installing it. They should have worded it that they had PLANNED to be on Steam so at least they were covered if they didn't get it, but to be honest it isn't such a hard thing anymore to get your game on there.
