BBC Tells DJs Not to Play Neil Young, The Doors, etc
The way music is broadcast seems to change daily, but it’s usually a case of more music being made available in more different ways. Now, though, the reverse is happening. The BBC has told its producers and DJs not to play music by Neil Young, the Doors, Journey or Bonnie Raitt – or any cover versions of their songs, or tracks sampling them.
The BBC’s legal department has emailed staff and independent producers telling them that the four acts have withdrawn from the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS). That means the BBC has no means of paying the artists for broadcast of their music, and so it cannot play their music without breaching copyright. This applies, according to the email, “whether [the music is] played out in a DJ-led music programme, or used in a speech-based programme”.
It all breaks down to money.
Fuck em' all.
Well, it seems to be out of the BBC's hands.
Sucks that it has to be restricted, but lawsuits are something to be avoided at all costs.
I thought it'd be like the old-style radio restrictions, where it's due to some really unlikely "drug references"
This is entirely down to the artists... If they wanna get paid they should re register to the publishing agency, it's clearly their personal choice to register but all it means is that they can't get paid broadcast royalties.
Although unfortunate, it's ultimately the rights holders choice whether or not anyone else gets to broadcast the works.
Curious about why the artists/rights holders decided to withdraw from the MCPS though.

Well, Neil Young has a vested interest in selling music with his Pono service, maybe he figures he can making a killing if he has the only service where you can hear his stuff
What will Britains Got Talent do now
Isn't Journey going to lose a shitton of money from the BBC not playing Don't Stop Believin' (let's face it, that's the only song that gets a decent amount of plays) any more?
I don't really see why the artists have pulled out thought, not being on BBC radio is a big loss of exposure for their music.

Doubt that though since he's also still on Pandora and Spotify, his interest is in overpriced enormous sized loss-less files , not really the sort of thing you find on radio, I'm willing to guess that the contracts went up and nobody bothered to renew them and now they're going to take notice and fix it

I doubt Neil Young gives two shits about money, really. He's still going strong.
so they can't play a song that samples some of the doors? i thought copyright laws protected sampling?

If a song samples another, then a percentage of the money made from the song has to go to the artist whose song was sampled. I learned about the MCPS when I was in college. It seems odd that the artists/rights holders would pull out of the MCPS as there's a lot of money involved with that. If any of their songs is played in public, then they get paid.

Journey isn't really Journey to me anymore, to me, anyway.
I couldn't care less for them, but I do fear for radio.
