The New Century Global Center, a behemoth Chinese officials are calling the world's largest standalone building, has finally opened in Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan province. The colossal structure has 5.5 million square feet of floor space and is large enough to fit 20 Sydney Opera Houses inside it.
china huh? I give it a month.
How very enlightened of you. Ever leave your state? Hell, ever leave your county? I'd not be surprised if you hadn't.
What ever happened to that super tall building that they were going to build like flat pack furniture?

Looks cool Can't wait for it to add up to the list of unused Chinese real estate
Looks cool Can't wait for it to add up to the list of unused Chinese real estate
this will probably get used quite a bit i mean, china might have issues, but they aren't north korea. people can actually use the things they build
Looks cool Can't wait for it to add up to the list of unused Chinese real estate
This seems important enough that they would use it. Its the biggest building in the world after all.
Pretty incredible really. Would be nice to see more high-res photos and videos of the building itself.
So fucking sick of popsci not working in Australia, fucking ridiculous.
obviously it's going to have weather inside of it. after all, the facebook cloud building did too
Looks like the Liberty Dome in Crysis 3

"Why in the world would they build this? Don't they already have the worlds largest shopping mall? Which is like 95% abandoned? Not to mention the swaths of ghost towns littering the Chinese landscape... Don't get me wrong, the building is incredible but what is the purpose, especially if it ends up abandoned and underutilized?"
Holy shit, it's like a gigantic version of Biosphere 2. [editline]12th July 2013[/editline] THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL I have the biggest architecture bonner right now
Scratch that, largest FLOOR area in the world. Not volume though
It isnt the largest building in the world. The Boeing factory in Everett Washington has 13.3 million square feet.
It has more floor space, that could be what they're referring to.
Is there another source for this? Popsci doesn't like Australians.
So fucking sick of popsci not working in Australia, fucking ridiculous.
Here's a script to automatically redirect popsci links to a proxy: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/173104

They're booming and building a bunch of infrastructure. I feel that the middle class with probably grow in China and this boom will eventually end and this shit will get used.
To everyone saying that this will go unused, it is in Chengdu, which beyond being capitol of the Sichuan province, is quite an important and wealthy city in China. This building was not built in a ghost city, and more than likely will be but to good use.
The jokes on you China, the Pentagon is still larger by one million square feet.
Damn it's bloody huge
It may be huge, but damn its ugly
