[release]It started 11 days ago when a resident at an upscale downtown L.A. high-rise tower smelled fumes coming from neighboring apartment. Firefighters knocked on the neighbor's door, but he refused to let them in.
They called police, who broke down the door of the penthouse just as the man inside was escaping through a back window and down a fire escape with multiple duffel bags over his shoulder.
"He escaped like Jason Bourne," LAPD Deputy Chief Mike Downing of the Counter-terrorism Bureau, referring to the movie spy character. What they found next has begun a week-long mystery.
The apartment contained sophisticated counterfeiting equipment as well as a cache of weapons, including an AK-47. They also found stacks of counterfeit $100 bills totaling $15,000 and a camera tripod.
But detectives' interest was really heightened when they looked outside the window and saw that the penthouse balcony had a spot-on view of the U.S. Federal Reserve building on Grand Avenue. Detectives now are searching for the suspect, who leased the $3,400-a-month penthouse, paying in advance with stacks of cash.
Picture 4Detectives aren't sure what Brian Alexik, a 33-year-old New Jersey man, was up to, and what role, if any, the Federal Reserve might have played in his schemes.
They are not exactly sure whom they are dealing with because detectives found multiple identifications, including passports, listing different aliases for the man.
"The curiosity in this case is the strategic location in which he [Alexik] chose to operate," Downing added. Photos found at his apartment show Alexik with significantly different looks.
In one photo, he's clean-shaven, holding up a glass of wine and smiling. Another photo shows him somewhat heavier, with a beard and bandanna covering his forehead. Police are now working with the U.S. Secret Service.
Experts who have reviewed the counterfeit money say it's of extremely high quality. It appears Alexik kept to himself in the apartment.
The manager declined to comment on the case. The LAPD served search warrants at several downtown locations and on Thursday announced the arrest of a man whom officials describe as an "associate" of Alexik. Gregory Koller, 32, was booked on suspicion of narcotics possession.
Police said a search of his home and a downtown warehouse found evidence "items consistent with manufacturing weapons." LAPD Capt. Steven Sambar, head of the department's major crimes division, said there was also evidence found linking Koller to Alexik.[/release]
Sounds like he's a Bourne criminal.
Avatar fits, that's Bourne right?

Nope, a militiaman from Michigan.
So jumping down a fire escape puts you on a skill level with an international spy?

In short, yes.

So, like, was he attempting to have a nice sniping shot to the Treasury?

It's more the fact that he had duffel bags of money and an ammo cache, and jumped out just as police entered the room.
This just in: Federal Reserve broken into, dozens of money printing machines stolen
This could make an interesting story, especially if they catch the dude and reveal some awesome grand scheme.
I also want to watch the Bourne movies again now. :saddowns:
this is really interesting
Pretty awesome, despite being a criminal.
the suspense kills
I bet the Secret Service are having fun with this case. There aren't many counterfeiters that come around that escape so quickly and with such a cloudy trail.
Really does sound like a badass scene from a Bourne Movie.
I was expecting him to beat the shit out of the cops then jump out the window.
What a badass, counterfeiting money in plain view of the Federal Reserve.

And the fact that he has multiple passports/photos/identities/aliases, extremely high quality counterfeit money, and escaped just as police barged in down a fire escape.
it seems like he was going to break into the bank and steal the real money and replace it with the counterfeit money.

So I heard you didn't read the article.
What a badass.
Really curious to see his motives.
Obviously a secret agent.
so if you see him in a libary run away
I guess the gas was a failed attempt at destroying the ammo cache and the photos of himself, and thus erasing the 'finger printy' evidence.
Ayo, Imma solve dis cayz.
Next we'll be hearing stories of a man with a parachute and a grappling hook wreaking mayhem in an underpriveledged country.

He was reffering to the scene in the first film, and that fact that he had multiple passport, pretty high calibre weaponry and the counterfiet bills.
I hope they never catch this guy. This is better than Hollywood movies.
All he needs to do now, is jack a cop car, and battle with a Volkswagen before slamming into a concrete divider and making yet another escape.
