A bipartisan bill introduced in the House Friday would allow targets of computer hacks to "hack back" and destroy what information of theirs was stolen.
This is not a good idea and I bet will be overstepped, It does say they are only going to allow you to destroy what was stolen, but what if it was copied in some way that isn't accessible by the counter-hacker?
i bet whoever wrote it hasn't the slightest idea of how computers even work
I think the person who proposed that bill watched too much of NCIS or similar shows.
I also hope it spurs a new generation of tools and methods to level the lopsided cyber battlefield, if not give an edge to cyber defenders.
Yea, they watched way too many TV shows.
This just smells like its for some other purpose, the reality is there is pretty much zero chance that one can "hack back", the attacker usually won't be where he attacked from or simply used other victims (botnets).
Data is transferred, copied, spread quick, how would one even attempt to delete it?
as cool as this sounds I'm actually wondering how many people agreed with it fully understand the implications and exactly how this doesn't work as well as one might think.
did someone write the bill so Mr. Robot can have an additional plot element?
Is this so when the NSA has their backdoor tools leaked they can "hack back" at people?
Is this so when the NSA has their backdoor tools leaked they can "hack back" at people?
What happens when the NSA hacks you and steals all your data. Maybe this bill would mean we're allowed to "hack back" at the NSA until all data is """"recovered"""" aka never, and forever.
(this does not make sense)
Would this make hacking the NSA legal?
Finally, all the Facebook grandmothers can fight back!
They're really on a roll with the piss poor legislation lately.
No problem with the concept itself, but I don't think it's technically feasible.
I don't really see how this is a bad thing, since it said you need to ask for fbi permission before doing the hack back. I'm assuming they'd do a check on the situation.
the cyberpunk future of private hackers working for corporations on hacks and counter-hacks is becoming real

Found the person who proposed this bill

This sounds like something from Ken M on Yahoo Answers.
ANd how in seven hells are the inept, undertrained, underpaid IT interns that keep setting corposecurity supposed to even do this?! They can't even figure out that you should encrypt sensitive data, that you should use passwords more secure than what people access Reddit with.
Total feel good measure.
An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.
What'd you expect, there's no requirement for our legislators to be experts in any field except sucking off their constituents.
We really should implement a policy of "must have a relevent degree to introduce legislation".
IE you'd need something in compsci to introduce legislation like this.
Technocracy now
Makes me think of that time the ethereum wallets or whatever were hacked and then "white hat" hackers intervened and returned some (most?) of it.
