• Growing it out (my hair) and keeping it under control

Okay, a little back story first. For the last five years I was an air cadet (go 204!) and because of that I never really got to grow my hair out and was the only person in high school who always had a nicely trimmed 1/4" cesar cut. ugh.... Anyways, fast forward to March 2009 and I'm finally done with cadets and ready to try new things. Goal#1: Get a job. (done and have been working for nine months now) Goal#2: Grow it out. Now I could stop at say three inches (which is about the average hair length for men) and call it good but I wanted to see what I missed for the last five years (and also because I lost a bet back in 2007). So I'm going all the way and not having a major haircut (facial hair can be trimmed as well as any hair that gets in my eyes) for five years. Guesstimation time! :eng101: The average person between 15 and 25 will grow approximately six inches of hair per year. If hair is left to grow and is not cut, after five years you will have about 30 inches (~2.5 feet) of hair. Now fast forward ten more months to now. I got nearly six inches now but have already noted a major problem: How the hell do you keep it under control? At all times it looks like I stuck a fork in a light socket. Also, why the hell is everyone calling me a hippy? I look like fucking Doc Brown and I don't hug trees.
You could try a hat. [editline]05:45PM[/editline] Or tie it with something.
Why not just keep it moderately long/short. I'm a air cadet too (144 ftw!) and I'm ok with having my hair short though I wouldn't mind it a little longer but not hippie style or anything, that just looks terrible and is hard to keep control of.
I grew mine out, great decision.. I now have a boof-fro. :3:

Pics of current hair state? [editline]05:50PM[/editline] Also while you have long hair everyone can legitimately say to you "Get a job, Hippie".
Please refer to avatar for my current hat fashion Ponytail? Fuck no.
I dunno then, hats and ties are pretty much the only ways to keep hair under control... You could try wax/gel, I guess.
Dreadlocks. Or just grow it out casually and tassle it a bit.
I grew my hair out when i was 15, kept it for about 6 years, then wanted to cut it but found that it was such a big thing to do that I kept putting it off. I finally did about 2 years ago, and it was the best feeling. Now its short its back to being low maintainance, and the ladies seem to prefer it. Still don't like it too short though, gotta be able to put some wax in it and funk it up a bit. If you do grow it out, just use hair sprays etc to try tame it, and/or tie it back with hair ties (feels real manly going into Boots to buy frikkin hair ties I tell ya). You could always dread it too, but remember if you do you'll lose half the length. And look like a dope fiend. Edit: (Pictures below) - second thoughts, perhaps a paper bag would be the best option?

That line won't work. Edit: When the hell did media tags on images stop working? Edit: lol, red eye.

Uh, get it cut every now and again. When you get it cut, they shape it for you so it grows in a better state.
I respect you man. You've got balls enough to post a picture, so i'm gonna help you out. I'm half arab and everyone knows arabs have fucking carpet hair. I'm gonna say it right off the bat, long hair is a PAIN IN THE ASS. Unless you don't mind having showers EVERY fucking day, cut it short now. I've had long hair for 2 years (shoulder length, but it's really curly, so it's not long) and all I can say is, I got really depressed when I had to have a shower just to go out, because if I woke up the next day, my hair would be in a state so i'd have to wash it to get it smooth. If you still want long hair, get products. Hair serum is like an oil, you just use a few squirts and it keeps it frizz-free and soft. Get hair spray, not the horrible sticky stuff, look around and try stuff till you find something that gets rid of the frizz, but doesn't make your hair hard as fuck. Hard hair spray is shit, makes your hair feel sticky and it ruins the effect. Silky soft smooth hair is where it's at. Girls love it. That's my input. Honestly, I loved my long hair, it looked good, but the amount of effort going into keeping it looking good was tremendous. If I didn't have a shower (for example, I shower one day, sleep, then the next day I don't shower) my hair would be like bed hair, and if I combed it, it would go puffy and poofy (like really airy and gay). If I tried putting serum in it, it'd just be flat and horrible. So i'd always have to shower. Very annoying when you want to just get out and go. Cut my hair short recently and all I can say is it's a God-send. I wake up in the mornings and just get the fuck out. I leave showering for later on at night, when i'm not in a rush. Much more easy. PS: Did I tell you, when I had long hair, it could take UP TO 40 MINUTES to fucking wash it? With short hair, it takes 10 minutes.
Good luck cleaning that bro, I like my hair to be about 6 inches.
Hairbrushes were invented for a reason.
Brush and straighten it. I think your hair would look nice straightened.
Brush and straighten it. I think your hair would look nice straightened.
I think you can guess how I rated you :v:
Long hair is for gays and emos.
Long hair is for gays and emos.
You're a dumbass. Not all people with long hair have it straight. Some people have it curly, naturally. I had seriously long hair (if I pulled it down, it'd come down just below my chin, and i've got a big ass head, but because I have really curly hair, it didn't seem long, just thick). Also, OP, I don't think you'd suit long hair. Your hair is too thin.
What exactly are you doing with it now? You have curly hair which I've heard from my cousins is a real pain to deal with so I'll try to relay some of what I've learned from them: Use a shampoo and conditioner that is designed for curly hair. You might also need to invest in some other kind of product... I have no clue what it is, it might be a spray or a serum. Don't brush your hair when it's dry. Get a wide tooth shower comb and brush your hair immediately after you wash it (while the water is still running in the shower). Don't vigorously rub your hair dry either: wrap it up in a towel afterwards. Blow drying your hair dries it out, so if you are inclined to blow dry it, make sure your hair still has a hint of dampness to it, don't wait till it's bone dry. Unless it's rainy out and your hair goes super frizzy in humidity, this will just make it really frizzy and static-y. I've heard that if your hair does get really frizzy in humidity that you can blow dry your hair for up to another 5 minutes after it's bone dry. I personally have never had the guts to try this, especially since it only takes a bit over 5 minutes for me to blow dry my waist length hair. Another thing to keep in mind is the following: are you doing this specifically to grow it out or are you just sick of getting haircuts? If you want decent looking long hair, you should definitely look into getting periodic trims. It's usually recommended that you get 1/4" - 1/2" trimmed every 8 weeks or so, but I'm lazy and usually get 1"-2" once or twice a year. Fair hair tends to be weaker and split ends can be a real pain. I've seen people with extremely long hair that stopped getting trims and within a few months over a foot had just shredded off. That also makes the ends look very mangy.
Good luck cleaning that bro.
It's already a routine: -get up -shower -dry -comb -go to work
What exactly are you doing with it now?
Combing and washing it. That's all.
6 inches a year? Fuck that I swear my hair grows about six inches in about 3 months.
Fauxhawk it. You'll look like a douche but at some lengths it's impossible to keep right due to bed hair, weird places it's been left to dry etc. I'm probably not much help as I've had long hair for years and dont remember the stage between long and short. Only the change between long and mohawk.
dreads
Use conditioner if you don't already, it will keep it in good condition. And also, get a trim every so often (I mean only the dead ends cut off), other wise you will get bad split ends and they will rip further and further up the length of the hair. Long hair is awesome. I used to have hair down to my shoulders and it was quite curly too. Only bad thing was the washing of it (main reason I cut it). What you could do though is wash it only every other day, wearing a hat on the days you don't wash it. That sounds skanky but it's not, as long as your hair doesn't get greasy on your day off. It also allows it to get it's natural oils replenished. I'm now thinking about growing my hair again but taking good care of it this time around. I literally went 3 years without a hair cut and it was a frizzy mess most of the time.
Comb it like women do, they keep their long hair under control when its 3 foot long.
This is coming from someone who has moderately long hair and isn't an idiot: Grow it a bit, get it cut, then it will be in shape. Then you are free to grow it. Also try and use a hairdryer after showering, otherwise your hair will look stupid and you will have no control over it, I recently started using a hairdryer, and at the risk of sounding gay, I must say that it is definitely worth using one. Also brush it.
It'll take you a long time, but long curly hair looks cool. Girl choice will be more limited, which may be a good thing depending on what your preference in girls is.
Long hair is for gays and emos.
Bigot. Brain get.
Brushing too much will stimulate the production of oils and stuff, bear that in mind. And yes use a blowdryer (only til it's slightly damp like someon else said), if you go out with wet hair the wind will dry it in a bad position.
I have long hair too, mine goes all the way to the end of my neck :v: I just wash and brush my hair, I dont do anything else to take care of it. The thing is that I dont have curly hair so its a totally different story :/
