• Gettysburg Park and Museum Asked to Remove all Purchasable Items From Stores, And They Actually Migh
The National Park Service Wednesday asked groups operating gift shops at national Civil War battlefields and monuments to pull the Confederate flag and items featuring only the flag — mugs, key chains, T-shirts — from store shelves, said Kathy Kupper, a National Park Service spokeswoman. The Gettysburg Foundation, which runs the gift shop and book store at the Gettysburg National Military Park visitor Museum and Visitor Center does not plan to pull its Confederate flag items. “We've not changed any policies related to the Confederate flag,” said Cindy L. Small, director of communications and marketing for the foundation, a nonprofit that works closely with the National Park Service. “Since Gettysburg is one of the places where the armies fought and soldiers carried these flags, we feel that it is appropriate to sell them here.” The gift shop sells several items — including a mouse pad and beer koozie — with both Confederate and American flags on them. American flags otherwise dominate the gift shop's shelves. A 3- by 5-inch Confederate flag on a stick sells for $1.99. A tub of little plastic Civil War soldiers comes with little plastic American and Confederate flags. A pocket knife with a photo of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee comes in a case featuring a Confederate flag. “We're very aware of how sensitive this issue is nationally,” said Lawhon, spokeswoman for Gettysburg National Military Park. Lawhon said policies over selling the Confederate flag are under review at Gettysburg as well as nationally.
http://triblive.com/news/adminpage/8624209-74/national-confederate-park#axzz3e7xdh1iD It seems they were reluctant at first, but they're giving into the pressure slowly. It's a damn shame.
Well RIP a huge portion of the income for these museums.
this is becoming beyond ridiculous
That title is a little inaccurate. They're only being asked to remove items with the flag, and they're not going to do it? That's what I got from the article anyway.
No. Don't do it. Goddamn it don't do it.
I could understand not wanting a Confederate flag flying around, but trying to completely get rid of it? No.
This whole thing is getting really stupid.

what the fuck is going on in this country. why are we trying to purge our history from everything? whats next, are they going to force history to be rewritten in text books to exclude the civil war?

That's a really misleading title.
The thread title is completely wrong. The NPS only asked them to remove items featuring the Confederate flag, and they refused to.
This is plain stupidity. It's like they are trying to erase history. ''Those who don't learn History are condemned to repeat it''. Also, obvious click bait title is obvious.

Whoever openly eats Special K must be a low-key racist!" On topic, this entire thing is so fucking silly it's not even remotely funny anymore. Even though the title is misleading, the fact that this has even come up whatsoever is inexcusable.

Fuck this, I can understand not flying the confederate flag on government owned property but fuck you if you're trying to stop me from ironically purchasing a confederate flag mug
Yeah well I don't see products with the Nazi Germany flag being sold anywhere, but I don't think we'd ever forget about that.
You've clearly never been in a surplus store.
If we're going to demonise the confederate flag like we do the nazi flag, does that mean we will see some confederate zombie games now too?

Or they'll start destroying the city again. This whole confederate flag thing is stupid. All of it I mean shit, is there anything that anyone hates? Just shoot up a place while holding it and it'll get banned
Ebay deciding not to sell them? I'm okay with that. Although they probably need to be more thorough. That's their choice. Asking a museum to stop selling them, though? The majority of people buying stuff from there will be for historical value or "hey I went to the confederate museum". I doubt as many "South will rise again!" people will buy flag stuff from a place saying "Let's all look at precisely how terrible the south was and why they will never rise again". Some, yeah, but much less than from a site like ebay. Although the mugs and t-shirts are probably tacky if they only have the confederate flag.
All it took was 1 shooting. Just like Sandy Hook.

Cereal and stuff are not related to racism, but the Confederate flag has direct racist ties.
Fuck this, I can understand not flying the confederate flag on government owned property but fuck you if you're trying to stop me from ironically purchasing a confederate flag mug
Indeed. Preventing the acquisition or possession of something just because it was linked to an atrocity/tragedy is pretty much censorship, and censorship in itself is almost always a childish action. The only time that censorship is the only option is if there are things in the cosmos that are so unnaturally horrifying that the mere sight of them causes even the sternest of men to gnaw at their own flesh and cry tears of black bile, in which case we'd do well not to gaze upon the Old Ones, and ESPECIALLY not upload the resurfacing of R'lyeh to YouTube or LiveLeak. But otherwise, keep that blowtorch away from that flag.
The title made me think they would just be removing gift shops from the parks, which kinda makes sense in that it just seems weird to be making money off of a place like gettysburg. Maybe its just me. But that this has to deal this whole confederate flag controversy is extremely stupid. Of all the places to remove it, this should be the last.

A lot of people interested in the Civil War like bringing something back with them when they take trips there. This money also probably supports keeping the land preserved. I've been there before and it is actually really interesting. Sad such beautiful land was the site of such a horrific battle.
Not glorifying a racist failed state whose symbol is often used by racists groups today =/= purging history.
But some of the stuff just had confederate flags -AND UNION FLAGS-. There's stuff like mugs that have the two crossed saying "Gettysburg". Crying whenever there's a confederate flag and just trying to shove it off in the corner and pretend it never happened will only give it more power and influence and will continue to make it lucrative to people like Roof.
