My parents' old eMac G4 is finally beginning to kick the bucket and I've been thinking about building their next computer instead of letting them buy a retail one. Thing is, I'm not sure what parts to get for them. They only need it for very basic things, such as internet browsing, MS Office, and the occasional low-end game (bejeweled, chess, myst, stuff like that). I tried putting stuff together on Newegg myself but it ended up totaling at $900 so I'm obviously not being considerate enough of lower-end products since I'm so used to shopping for high-end stuff.
I don't know how much they'd be willing to spend on a new one but considering decent pre-built ones I've seen from Best Buy will go for around $600 the goal is to beat that (excluding speakers+monitor; including OS, mouse, keyboard, decent wifi adapter).
It should be something that will last them a minimum of 4 years, isn't a piece of shit but isn't a high-end build that's going to have a high-end pricetag.
Thank yous.

You don't even need a dedicated video card for that.
You can better get a cheap prebuilt pc if you're only going to use it for that.
Oh, you won't be able to run Myst on any new PC, it doesn't even run on my shitty netbook
$309

Will easily to the tasks required of it.
Edit:
Well shit if you spend $500 you can even get:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883147071
The problem with that PC is that:
a) It's a compaq.
b) According to http://www.cpubenchmark.net/, the Sempron scores 650 while the i5-750 scores 4170. He wants this computer to last at least 4 years, the one you picked can barely run 7.
i'm sorry I don't see bejeweled, web browsing or chess suddenly being revolutionized in the next 4 years to require a dedicated graphics processors so a cheap build will be fine
What the hell is with Facepunch? Recommending pre-builts?
Build your own OP.
Custom built PCs are soo much better for the dollar.
One sec OP, I'll make a build.

When you're looking at something this cheap it's often cheaper to buy a prebuilt.

If your parents don't like the blue LEDs on the case, theres a version of it without them for the same price.

No, pre-builts are never the way to go.

$600 is a good budget for a PC?! I just made a i5 build for under $600.
What the fuck are you guys doing recommending a i5 Build to parents.. that only use it for email and crappy little windows 7 games. If your going for that kind of build, go AMD. Great performance for a good price... You defiantly do not need a dedicated video card for that.

This.
Build something for maybe even $300 if you want to be economical. (And pocket the rest for yourself :q:)
Exactly :P Tell them you spent 600$ And spend 300$ And have great performance to do all the stuff they do. Then keep the rest for yourself xD
Get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.303820

What drugs did you take? Comparing a sempron with an i5 is the stupidest thing I've heard since, well ever.
Why are you even in this forum section, don't ever touch anything hardware related again.

This $290 will do everything, and a lot more. I'm willing to bet it'll do HL2:EP2 or L4D2 on decent settings.

I overclocked my sempron to 71.234213904Ghz on air. :smug:
Ya.....
Gotta admit, 300$ Is the max I'd spend on a system like this. Not even... 200$ Will do for a AMD X2 System

An i5 build is going to last longer than a 240 build.

Umm that GPU will max source games easy.
And that combo would be a lot better if it had a case, CPU, a PSU, and an optical drive,
