I came home and "attempted" to log into facebook when my internet disconnected. I thought nothing of it. It happens all the damn time, anywho I checked the plugs that commonly come unplugged. They are perfectly in place. I think that's weird so I finally get my internet to come back up to pace with my computer and when I do SHIT HITS THE FAN Mcafee shit's itself by updating and my Windows protector defender shit practically dies and say's it isn't updated and it turns itself off. So now i'm running Malwarebytes and i'm going to load up SpyBot S&D soon. Any ideas as what this could be and what I could do? tl;dr - computer blows, shit stops working and now i'm here. Help. P.S. My computer is running SUPER slow which is unusual. EDIT: Oh and my windows defender definitions supposedly can't update.
Windows XP? Install all the new updates, preferably with an update pack. That could fix the internet thing. If not, well your best bet is:
format C:\

format C:\

Don't do this.
Don't do this.
You're right...
format %systemdrive%
..just to be safe.
Ok lets get serious here. Put your windows CD in and restart the computer booting from the CD. Go through all the prompts and select to repair. If that doesn't work try sfc /SCANNOW . That should fix any protected files that might be screwy. (It takes some time to do though)
Run the scans in safemode to scan faster.
You're using McAfee and Windows Defender. I'm sorry, but you brought this on yourself. Rid yourself from those programs and get avast! or Comodo or ANYTHING. ANYTHING is better than McAfee and Windows Defender.
Aren't you forgetting Norton?
Ah yes, I did forget about that. Even still, Norton is better than McAfee...but not by much.
I prefer avast! because I don't really have to do anything. Just don't get AVG.
What's everyone got against AVG? I've been using the free version for years, and never had a virus.
What's everyone got against AVG? I've been using the free version for years, and never had a virus.
Agreed, thought i am mad at them for pushing the paid version on to people even thought they want the free.
Well AVG doesn't work well with steam and it doesn't catch viruses well for me. And it never updated itself.
Well AVG doesn't work well with steam and it doesn't catch viruses well for me. And it never updated itself.
Works fine for me with Steam. And it updates itself regularly. So either you have issues or a setting here and there is unchecked. Also, OP, Can you run a HijackThis log and post it here if you don't see anything with scans?
What's everyone got against AVG? I've been using the free version for years, and never had a virus.
Because AVG has been proved to be worse than most free virus scanners. Afaik Avast! and Avira are pretty high on the list and Norton doesn't do that bad either.
Works fine for me with Steam. And it updates itself regularly. So either you have issues or a setting here and there is unchecked.
The main thing that doesn't work is the in-game overlay which steam says doesn't really work with AVG.
The main thing that doesn't work is the in-game overlay which steam says doesn't really work with AVG.
I don't have a problem with the UI overlay.
