• Need Parts, Low Budget

I need to upgrade my computer since the one I have right now is really out of date. I don't have much money though so I'm going to be reusing as many parts as I can. I don't know a whole lot about computer parts except processors which I have a basic understanding of so that's why I need your help. [b]Budget:[/b] $475-$500 [b]Games I Want to Play:[/b] Battlefield 3 + Portal 2 when they come out, Natural Selection 2, possibly Homefront, and other games [b]Native Resolution of Monitor:[/b] 1440 x 900 [b]Things I Can Reuse:[/b] HDD, Optical drive, OS [b]Things I Need:[/b] [list]Processor: preferably quad-core and/or Sandy Bridge [*]Motherboard [*]Graphics Card [*]Power Supply [*]RAM[/list] [b]Extras I Want/Need:[/b] None [b]Where I Live:[/b] NJ, USA I've already picked out [url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=11-129-042&SortField=1&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Keywords=%28keywords%29&Page=1#scrollFullInfo]this[/url] case. It won't be payed for using the budget stated above. I already have money set aside for it as it's the only thing I'm pretty set on getting, unless you guys think otherwise. If I missed a necessary part or if I left out important information, just let me know.
[url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129098&Tpk=antec%20one%20hundred[/url] is pretty much an updated 300 with an interior that doesn't suck nearly as much or there's the HAF 912 which is better than both
What RAM is it? You can't use a DDR3 mobo, with DDR2 RAM. An Athlon II X4(Maybe a phenom?)/GTX 460([url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20600007323%20600062521&IsNodeId=1&Tpk=GTX%20460]This[/url] with the rebate) with a CF/SLI motherboard, would work nicely.
I have 2x 1gb DDR2 RAM sticks and 2x other 512mb RAM sticks that don't say. Should I invest in DDR3 RAM sticks?
snip remaking [editline]23rd March 2011[/editline] oh DDR2, you'll need RAM then hold on [editline]23rd March 2011[/editline] [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103871[/url] Athlon II X4 640 [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130235R[/url] MSI SLi compatiable motherboard [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144478[/url] 4GB RAM [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127519[/url] GTX 460 768MB [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371021[/url] Antec 650W PSU about $445, again as an upgrade you can stick in a second 460 768MB in the future I didn't want to use an open box mobo but without it I can't get any sort of upgradability now that AM3 is dead
I managed to pull in another $50. The budget range is now $475-$500.
then this [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103871[/url] Athlon II X4 640 [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157198[/url] Asrock Crossfire compatiable motherboard [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144478[/url] 4GB RAM [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161348[/url] 6850 [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371021[/url] Antec 650W PSU $483

give me a second, imma make something [editline]23rd March 2011[/editline] [URL]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171031[/URL] [URL]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231310[/URL] [URL]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808[/URL] [URL]http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.608642[/URL] 500.95 use this promo code for 10 dollars off HARDOCPX316A 955 x4 3.2ghz, 4gb ddr3 133mhz, 6950, 770 ATX mobo, 500w psu it also comes with a 10 gift card total after, 480 worth it IMO
If I could expand my budget another 35$ to $510, would this be a good build? Sandy Bridge i5-2400 [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074&cm_re=sandy_bridge-_-19-115-074-_-Product[/url] H61 Intel Motherboard [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128482[/url] GTX 460 768MB [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127519[/url] Cooler Master 500W [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171031[/url] 4GB RAM [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144478[/url] 508$
that coolermaster PSU is pretty bad and the second PSU you found doesn't output as much on the 12V rail as the truepower
[QUOTE=reapaninja;28773626]that coolermaster PSU is pretty bad and the second PSU you found doesn't output as much on the 12V rail as the truepower[/QUOTE] Yeah, I didn't look into it much. I'll try and find another.
I have that psu(550w verison) running an x6 1055t, 16gb ram, 3 hdd's and a 6950 2gb no complaints
[QUOTE=JohnEdwards;28773764]I have that psu(550w verison) running an x6 1055t, 16gb ram, 3 hdd's and a 6950 2gb no complaints[/QUOTE] different OEM, and it's still pretty bad [quote=http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Cooler-Master-eXtreme-Power-Plus-550-W-Power-Supply-Review/969/9]Although some can see Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 550 W as an option if you are not going to pull 550 W from it, we can't recommend this unit, as it burns if you try to pull its rated wattage. Its main technical problem is efficiency, between 73.2% and 77.5%, which would prevent us from recommending this unit even if it could deliver its labeled power. But there is another problem: pricing. Costing USD 65 it is simply too expensive for what it is. For the same price you can buy an OCZ StealthXStream 500 W, which provides higher efficiency. You see, this unit is a renamed Seventeam ST-500BAZ, a 500 W power supply that has already been discontinued by the manufacturer - no wonder it couldn't deliver its labeled power.[/quote]
you can try this [URL]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152035[/URL] or [URL]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182076[/URL] [editline]23rd March 2011[/editline] [QUOTE=reapaninja;28773804]different OEM, and it's still pretty bad[/QUOTE] I use these [URL]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171046[/URL] on most of my customer computers, no complaints The build I posting has a 6950 on it so I think it is fair to say you will get a better overall performance boost [url]http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/162?vs=156[/url]
he needs a PSU not an IED
[QUOTE=reapaninja;28773935]he needs a PSU not an IED[/QUOTE] Say what you must but I have never had a problem with any coolermaster psu's
there are people who have never had a problem with logisys, that doesn't stop them being utter shit
[QUOTE=reapaninja;28773994]there are people who have never had a problem with logisys, that doesn't stop them being utter shit[/QUOTE] Good point, OP get this [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130290[/url] [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139018[/url] [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231394[/url] [url]http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.593507[/url] Tag on the promo code HARDOCPX316A for 10 off comes to 490 Even though sandy bridge is good, I won't deny it beats amd, but you will have a much stronger gpu in this build making up for it, and with AM3 boards you can have upgradability to the bulldozers which are rumored much faster than the sandy bridge. [url]http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/290?vs=315[/url]
AM3 boards aren't compatible with AM3+ CPUs though, and I don't think anything else is coming out for AM3 (other than maybe another pointless clock and price bump) so it's a dead socket yet more of AMD's "simple" compatibility
[QUOTE=reapaninja;28774998]AM3 boards aren't compatible with AM3+ CPUs though, and I don't think anything else is coming out for AM3 (other than maybe another pointless clock and price bump) so it's a dead socket yet more of AMD's "simple" compatibility[/QUOTE] [url]http://www.google.com/#q=AM3+boards+am3%2B+compatible&hl=en&prmd=ivnsu&source=univ&tbs=nws:1&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=hZuKTeGOPOiB0QGa7q3fDQ&ved=0CCMQqAI&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=bf795a488bdd48a0[/url] I know asus is giving bios updates to make sure am3 will take am3+ cpu's I don't see why others won't do the same
