The HTC Vive virtual reality headset hasn't yet reached store shelves, meaning only a select few developers have gotten their hands on pre-release kits and explored the possibilities of "room-scale" VR. For one staffer at Valve Software, the Vive's official SteamVR partner, that meant an opportunity to claim first dibs on doing something nobody else has ever done with a Vive headset: propose marriage.
The news came from the bride-to-be's public Facebook feed, and the proposal took place in a Vive testing room at Valve's headquarters in Bellevue, WA. Kelly Tortorice had gone to the Valve offices—where her then-boyfriend, now-fiancé Chandler Murch works—under the pretenses of trying out a range of SteamVR demos (including the very-impressive Tilt Brush art app) that the company has shown off at various gaming expos in the past year.
"So there I was, typical day... on a sunken ship deck; fixing robots; painting three-dimensional fire; walking through the Alps," Tortorice wrote. "Suddenly, a virtual engagement ring started floating my way."
Valve seems to like helping people propose.
Valve seems to like helping people propose.
They helped me and my fiance, too

Ironic.. given their commitment issues.
Ironic.. given their commitment issues.
They don't have commitment issues, it's people having the false idea that Valve is a videogame development studio and and not a crackhouse for rich nerds.

Half-life 2 episode 2 called. It said they fucking cliff hung the series eight years ago.

Yeah, that's what he said.

Of all the franchises that died on a cliffhanger, Half Life is the one I barely care about.
Even if they come up with continuation it will be like "THREE WEEKS/SIX MONTHS/TWENTY YEARS LATERRR" and they won't elaborate on what happened after eli got his brain molested past maybe some hints, anyway.

They still ultimately failed to commit not only to the completion of the series but to the episodic concept itself.

Valve has been pretty good at keeping the half life timeline pretty close to each other, with minimal cutscenes.
The longest you go from point A to B is through the slow teleport in HL2, which is a week. In EP1 you end up pretty much at the point where you left off at, same for EP2.
Very interesting propose marriage. Want to try too
how about valve proposes a release date for l4d3
[editline]4th October 2015[/editline]
that would be pretty cool and way more fun than getting hitched probably

There's about 20 years between Half Life 1 and 2
There's about 20 years between Half Life 1 and 2
In terms of what Gordon himself experiences, it basically an instant.
VR engagements have so much room for creativity and diversity holy shit

idk
l4d is pretty boring
see, no motion sickness.
wonder if we'll ever be able to read a thread about valve without posts about releasing hl3 or w/e
probably not
and that's no one's fault but valves really
In terms of what Gordon himself experiences, it basically an instant.
That's what the slow teleport is as well though??

Yes, which Gordon spent in stasis...of sorts.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if there are any of the original writers/developers left at Valve. Anyone who knows how the story would continue at least, or maybe has the story intact in some cabinet, already written up to some point. Even if dating back to around the time when EP2 got out. :v:

Well i mean...
Mark Laidlaw and all.
What an incredibly sweet and creative way to propose marriage. I hope their life together is a long and happy one.

Great!
Although.. he's 55 years old..
Well i mean...

What's he up to nowadays? He seems to have escaped the public eye and I haven't heard about him writing Dota 2 lines. I did notice a Marc Laidlaw in MGSV's credits, on the translation team or something. Could be a coincidence though.
another one of the thousands of reasons to get a vive. put on the most noise cancelling headphones possible, put a body scan system with the vive, change the controllers to electronic gloves, and make the vive screens as small as your pupil so they can fit on your eyes without any weight and you got total immersion. would be cool if it was possible, though.

That's not how optics work though. What you REALLY want is a laser shooting the image directly into your eye.

Plenty. Cross-referencing the original Half-Life's credits with valvesoftware.com's People page, these individuals have been on board all the way:
Gaben (actively contributed to development)
Yahn Bernier
Ken Birdwell
John Guthrie
Dario Casali
John Cook
Greg Coomer
Marc Laidlaw
Randy Lundeen
Dave Riller
Jay Stelly
Robin Walker
Douglas R. Wood (Doug Wood on their People webpage)
Kelly Bailey is also back.
Several people appear in the in-game end credits of Half-Life who are also still at Valve, but who aren't mentioned on the Developer Wiki credits page.
Can't believe you all are complaining about video games not being released when someone just got proposed to in VR :v:

Welcome to FP, we claim we don't care about the Half-Life franchise until something solid comes up but still derail threads with it.
Yeah, I would wish for a HL sequel too, but since Source 2 is undergoing deployment in Dota 2 and Left 4 Dead 3 will likely be a launch title for the new engine I would not be surprised to hear nothing for another 2 to 3 years.
But still, Valve is going on a rampage if you ask me. They try to change the gaming on the PC: unifying digital gaming experience on steam, bringing it to the living room, bring VR as a new form of gaming experience, going multi-platform to avoid too much dependency on Windows.
What is not to like?
I get it, we all want a HL sequel, and since we are nearing a timeframe of 9 years since HL2:EP2 got released (which in that measurement of time Half-Life to Half-Life 2: Episode 2 got released) with nothing in sight is frustrating, but raging about it in every Valve thread that comes by won't let it get us faster.
