Is Trump Tweeting From a 'Secure' Smartphone? The White House Won't Say
For some time, the public has known that Donald Trump does a lot of his tweeting himself, from the account @realDonaldTrump, and from an Android smartphone. But many cybersecurity experts believed that would change once Trump took the oath of office, because White House-approved communication devices are much more secured — and stripped down — than the smartphones the rest of us use.
In fact, former President Barack Obama once compared his official White House smartphone to a child's toy. "It doesn't take pictures, you can't text," Obama told Jimmy Fallon in 2016. "The phone doesn't work. You can't play your music on it. So, basically, it's like — does your 3-year-old have one of those play phones?"
A few recent reports indicate that President Trump might still be tweeting from his old Android, and he may not even be following all the security protocols he should.
DID HE SMASH ANY OF HIS oldPHONES??????????
I remember when obama had a special blackberry
So he's using his private unsecured device for confidential government communications while not following proper security protocols. Good thing he's not hosting emails on it, otherwise he might in hot water.
If he's on the S3 that was rumored at some point that's vulnerable to pretty much everything out there, and i bet he doesn't encrypt it. Maybe not even a passcode :v:
it's funny to think that if you drop one of those ad hijackers onto one of trump's favorite news sites like breitbart, it'd be game over :v:
This presidency is severely disappointing.
It's kinda ironic that Trump's victory rode in on issues of corruption, conspiracy, and breaches of security committed by his adversary, and yet here we are.

Were you expecting something better or something worse?
... If the guy's doing nothing but tweeting with the damn thing, it doesn't matter.
He could be carrying around a second approved phone, and using that for government business.
There's a ZDNet article saying that Trump has been given the secure device, that has been approved by the Secret Service.

I couldn't find a reference, but as far as I know, the phone is some fairly standard Android phone that has had almost all functionality removed. I wouldn't be surprised if they also have the source code etc. for the baseband modem in order to audit it. Probably didn't want to waste time digging through the camera's firmware, so it's disabled.

Honestly my expectations have been free-falling but Easy D continues to find ways to lower them.

If it's an S3 and it asn't been software updated past 4.4.x, it's vulnerable to Heartbleed. Which means the President's device would be vulnerable to having random bits of its memory exfiltrated to a third-party server, with basically no indication of any attacking. This includes encryption keys, text (like say national security matters), anything in the machine's memory.
But even Trump wouldn't be that dumb, right? :worried:
Why is Trump still using an S3 in the first place?

Its the the best phone, a beautiful phone.
The new phones are larger and call more attention to the size of his hands.
As funny as that would be, its p much the same size as any 5in device.

Google pence email leaks
If there ends up being an almost mirror Hillary scandal where Trump is using an unsecure phone to talk about sensitive information I'm going to die of laughter
LOCK HIM UP

I doubt Trump has the knowledge or the forethought needed to set up something as sophisticated as a private server.

I get disabling stuff like Internet connections, so he can't download Flashlight Full Pro and become compromised, or the camera to avoid all possible issues by cutting its roots, but... What does he even do with a phone that can't send messages, call people or even play music? Can it receive them, at least? Or is it just a bulky clock? That maybe can be used to take notes?

Trumps the kinda person that'd pay a child to set it up for him.

Trump has a son. He's 10 years old. He has computers. He is so good with these computers, it's unbelievable. The security aspect of cyber is very, very tough. And maybe it's hardly doable. But I will say, we are not going the job we should be doing. But that's true throughout our whole governmental society. We have so many things that we have to do better, Lester, and certainly cyber is one of them.
Apart from his son Trump also has lots of experts at hand to help him with "cyber". Surrounded by such talent I'm sure Trump would have no issue getting a private server.
I have so many website. I have them all over the place. I hire people, they do a website. It costs me $3
A website generally requires you to have a server so if Trump pays only $3 for a server AND a website. The average cost for a website is $400+. So he is getting a server for $-397. Trump makes the best deals. The greatest deals. People pay him for him to have a server, now that he's president I'm sure even more people, and governments, would be willing to host a server for him free of charge.

it can call people with similar devices a like his wife or his advisors, thats basically the point.

Why not? I still use an S3. I don't care for the "features" (A.K.A gimmicks) of the newer Samsung phones, I just want a phone that can connect to WiFi and use some basic apps.

You are vulnerable to tons of Android exploits that can't be fixed except by upgrading to a version of Android that is too recent to even be supported by the S3's hardware.
For you, a random person, this is not a big deal, if you get owned then whatever. For the leader of one of the most powerful nations on the planet and the person entrusted with the launch codes for the US nuclear arsenal, this is a huge deal.

Secret Service wouldn't let him use a smart phone, and the phone they did let him use they modified
