• Sweden Keeps Sex-Change Sterilization Laws
A move to scrap Swedish laws requiring compulsory sterilization for people undergoing gender reassignment surgery has been put on ice following opposition from the Christian Democrats. The Christian Democrats have convinced the other centre-right parties to set aside a new legislative proposal that would have scrapped the law, arguing that the issued is legally complex and needs to be examined further. Opposition parties decried the move, claiming that a majority of members in the Riksdag support efforts to ditch the demand. “It's too bad that the government and prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt haven't taken into account that there is wide support in the Riksdag to scrap the [sterilization] requirement,” Social Democrat MP Lena Hallengren, deputy chair of the Riksdag social committee, told the TT news agency. According to legislation passed in 1972, to undergo a sex change operation a person must be over 18-years-old, a Swedish citizen, be sterilized and unmarried. In the proposal for new legislation, to be be presented by the government this spring, the conditions that sex change candidates are unmarried and Swedish citizens will be dropped, according to TT. But not the sterilization condition. In the autumn of 2011, both the Moderate Party and the Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) expressed support for changing the law. "We don't see it as modern, and it doesn't fit with our view of human beings," said party secretary Sofia Arkelsten to the TT news agency in September. But concerns from the Christian Democrats were great enough to sway the other parties of the governing centre-right Alliance to put off new legislation and instead commission an inquiry into the matter. According to Hallengren, the move amounts to an attempt to dodge the issue. “It means that the Christian Democrats have won and that the Moderates don't think it's important,” she said. Green Party MP Agneta Luttrop called the law outdated, arguing it should have been changed long ago. “It's a macabre law. It's not dignified that in 2012 someone should be forcibly sterilized,” she told TT, questioning what good will come from additional examination of the issue. “Other countries don't have demands like this and it hasn't presented an legal complications,” she added. Christian Democrat MP called the decision a victory for social affairs minister and party head Göran Hägglund and an indication of the positive dialogue that takes place between the governing parties. “It's important that we stand by the precautionary principle and don't rush into legislation. This question needs to be looked at more closely,” he said. Liberal MP Barbro Westerholm had previously indicated she planned to push the issue in the Riksdag, but has been forced to retreat. “I can live with this. It's a positive step forward where that had previously been deadlock. Sometimes it takes time to reach the goal, but it's better than having things stop completely,” she told TT. In a statement, the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (Riksförbundet för homosexuellas, bisexuellas och transpersoners rättigheter – RFSL), criticized the decision, claiming that “government stability” had been given priority over respect for human rights. “It's extremely remarkable that a democracy like Sweden now believes that this must be examined further,” RFSL chair Ulrika Westerlund said in a statement. She pointed out that the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) proposed changing the law back in 2010. “To now want to investigate the matter yet again can't be seen as anything else than that those who have ordered the inquiry want to reach a different conclusion for political reasons,” said Westerlund.
http://www.thelocal.se/38466/20120112/ Once again the alliance finds keeping stable to be more important than human rights. I don't want to live on this Sweden anymore.
Funny thing that we manage to hold back on this, but are probably one of the worst countries when it comes to keeping every. single. thing. politically correct.
I find it fucking disgusting that people who try their utmost to deny others their harmless way of living as much as possible call themselves "considerate" and "caring".
Funny thing that we manage to hold back on this, but are probably one of the worst countries when it comes to keeping every. single. thing. politically correct.
Agree, Swedish politicians try to be as politically correct as possible but they vote this down? Fucked up.
Sex change sterilization? Well, wouldn't a "Pregnant male" cause strange hormonal issues with the baby? But even still, just let them be the way they want to be without permanently screwing them over.
Why do people feel the need to tell someone how they are supposed to live?
Sometimes I'm disappointed in my country.
But if you're getting a sex change operation, wouldn't that sterilize you in the first place? Unless of course the sex change doesn't actually change the sexual organs. Did I miss the point where sex change operations advanced this much?

Did I miss the point where sex change operations advanced this much?
Yeah, and I'm also wondering if the hormones would screw with the baby. I'm pretty sure if we tried a full 100% operation it wouldn't work really good at all, baby making-wise.

Did I miss the point where sex change operations advanced this much?
I can see how a male undergoing a sex change would be sterilized, since they have to cut the balls off. I don't think they shove them up into your crotch. But with a female person, most of their gender's organs are inside, so I don't think it's necessary to sterilize them. I don't know though, it's not the kind of topic I normaly research :v:
what.
this law is redundant, if your going to have a sex change operation, you don't have the reproductive functions of the opposite sex's organs, they probably just stopped talking about removing this law because it would cause more problems politically without any non symbolic gain for anyone
Gonna make my girlfriend pregnant by rubbing my vagina on hers. Seriously what's the problem with getting sterilised when you have a sex change?
While it's true that at least men switching to women gets sterilized for obvious reasons it's still by law forbidden to keep any kind of from semen before the change is done. I guess that's the issue.
Gonna make my girlfriend pregnant by rubbing my vagina on hers. Seriously what's the problem with getting sterilised when you have a sex change?
I don't see why you should be sterilised with force just because you're getting a sex change, that sounds very arbitrary to me.
It's incredibly saddening that these laws exist in the first place.
Christian Democrats
Why must religion and politics be intertwined?
Why must religion and politics be intertwined?
it's kind of silly to think that religious views won't affect political stances.
Because sweden needs Chicks with dicks and Guys with clits
what's it like being an abhorrent person
Because sweden needs Chicks with dicks and Guys with clits
Bigots always come out of the woodwork for transgender threads.
Because sweden needs Chicks with dicks and Guys with clits
every country needs them if you ask me.
I think if there's nothing medically preventing the baby coming out normally there shouldn't be a problem. Also quick admission: Transgenderness REALLY freaks me out. It's one of those things that I have to try super hard not to be a raging bigot about. There's some primal part of me that makes my stomach curl when I think that someone could have been a different gender before. It's not the people that creep me out it's the idea. I dunno.
sure, call it primal and remove all association of guilt from yourself.
Uhh, what? Just because it's not my thing, and I don't personally like it doesn't mean I should be guilty about anything. They can do what they want, I would never try to interfere, that's my entire point.
This is a bad law at all, it does actually help. I mean medically, changing gender isn't a easy thing, guys. It's not something you just go and do. Getting woman parts as a male is fucking hard and somewhat dangerous. We dont have the technology to do this kind of stuff successfully yet. I have nothing against transgenders or anything I just wanted to point that out.
