Blink outside the box: RadioLab has a brilliant short podcast on the psychological role of blinks, based on a study that found that when watching a film our blinks are remarkably synchronised.
The programme dispels the myth that blinking serves only to keep our eyes wet as apparently studies have shown that we don’t blink any more or less in different humidities.
Instead, it explores a fascinating new study that found that blinks became synchronised when watching a film of another person, but not when watching landscapes or listening to stories.
Interestingly, blinks seems to be controlled so they occur at the start and end of meaning actions.
We know that blinking is also tied to some quite fundamental functions of the brain. For example, the higher the amount of spontaneous blinking you do, the higher the amount of dopamine you produce in the striatum, a deep brain area.
This makes sense. I blink about once a minute when I'm at the PC as opposed to about once every 15 seconds when I'm talking to someone IRL.
you are now blinking manually
Wow, I'm blinking as I read this thread. Rated informative.
You must post in this thread if you started blinking your eyes while reading the OP.
Also interesting.
Oh fucking ninja'd twice.

You are now breathing manually.
But seriously, I was thinking about JUST THIS yesterday, I had noticed that I sometimes don't blink at all while I blink often at other times.
Ninja'd
Well my my...
Interesting.

Your heart is now beating manually.

This makes sense. From studying animation for a while, you come to realize that people blink to emphasize actions and such. For instance, almost every time someone turns their head, they blink. I'm not sure if that's for the same reason as this, but it definitely happens like clockwork, and it's something that few people notice.
Eh I must have a problem or something, I blink every 5-10 minutes, which is apparently not enough.

You are now masturbating automatically.
Back to thread, this is quite interesting, but when i'm talking to someone I don't blink in sync with them.
you are now blinking manually
Fuck you i was not blinking at all..
Also, if you think about this, humans are supposed to live in groups..herds..If one person laughs, more will laugh. If one pukes, more will puke, if one looks up, more will look up. Synchronizing seems to be more of a natural defense than anything else. If a movie has a person in it then there's something to watch. There's nothing to focus on while looking at landscape because you're not looking at anything specific.
It creates dopamine to blink rapidly and erratically? FUCK YES RANDOM BLINKING.
fucking hell im blinking faster than road runner with a rocket up its ass now and i can't stop!
damn you dr bob ><
This can't be true. If I don't blink my eyes sting.
It's also to keep your eyes clean.
+1 Poetry Skill for the title.
It's also to keep your eyes clean.
Correct, that's why you get eye boogers. >:C
Fuck, must... Breathe... Automatically!
You are now aware that you can't see the underside of your knees.
It creates dopamine to blink rapidly and erratically? FUCK YES RANDOM BLINKING.
Spontaneous blinking is an indicator of higher dopamine production rate in your brain. You won't get extra dopamine by blinking a lot.
No you fools! Dopamine is produced because it feels good to moisten your eyes and clear dust, if it didn't feel good we would have dusty eyes because there would be no incentive to blink.
You are now aware that you can't see the underside of your knees.
Unless you rotate your leg and head slightly.
