Plot
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

I guess this is Guillermo's post-Hobbit movie. But enjoy
Fuck yes giant monsters
Holy FUCK.
A mish-mash of every Japanese giant monster/robot movie by Guillermo Del Toro?
Yes.
YES.
That sounds cheesy as fuck.

This is the most gloriously cheesy plot synopsis I've ever read
I love it
I want to see this. Apparently it came out of the ruins of what was supposed to be a live action Neon Genesis Evangelion movie. I'm happy we're getting this instead
It's funny how Legendary films is making both this and the new Godzilla movie. Since current speculation is that said Godzilla movie should be released around the same time as Pacific Rim, it'll be interesting to see how exactly this plays out.

Wrong my friend, Godzilla will be released in 2014, which is another year away

It's still interesting, and it's still close enough that people will be comparing the two.
here's a sneak peek of the Kaiju fighting each other:

Looks climatic enough
Charlie Day is in this, he's clearly going to be the hilarious comedic character.
Idris Elba? Sold.
Charlie Day is in this, he's clearly going to be the hilarious comedic character.
I'm guessing he'll be the dumb but lovable mechanic for these huge robots. Well, if not dumb he'll still be a mechanic. His default look seems to disheveled and greasy for him to be anything else.
I didn't notice the people in the concept sketch of the hydra, if it's a fight it has potential
Charlie Day is in this, he's clearly going to be the hilarious comedic character.
I think in an interview he said his role will a bit more serious.
I came
Looks alright, will probably suck but I'll go see it anyway, I mean it's got mecha and monsters, what's not to like

Guillermo Del Toro is a good director.
First Comic-Con image surfacing featuring our main duo gearing up for battle

Edited:
More shit from Comic Con

So this is like Gundams vs Godzilla monsters? sounds cool.
[editline]12th July 2012[/editline]
Aliens behind everything, calling it.
Guillermo Del Toro is a good director.
I am not full of confidence that this'll be great, but we'll wait and see
I have been wrong before believe it or not
Wow, this sounds like a combo of Godzilla meets Evangelion, and it sounds amazing in concept. Hopefully they won't screw it up, but hey, del Toro does some great stuff, doesn't he? So I shouldn't worry too much, but i'll keep my Cynicism Generators running at Code Lime (between Code Green and Code Yellow) just in case.
I sure hope that the final fight is against Ghidora, or even Cthulhu.

Huh, no wonder I got those Evangelion vibes. Well, that's what comes from a thing about giant mechas fighting giant monsters, even though the EVAs are technically kaijus with mecha additions and a kid pilot.
Pfft, evangelion?
Where are you getting that from

Oh, I just read your post
Oh well I don't think so.
Footage was just shown at Comic Con and apparently it blew everyone out of the water. Described as amazing.
Guillermo del Toro has a way of presenting audiences with a strange and mythical concept in a believable way that doesn't alienate the audience (See Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy, for example). I'm interested if only because of del Toro's involvement.
There's a lot more info for this on /m/. The jaegers are going to move more like robots instead of walking like a giant person
Footage was just shown at Comic Con and apparently it blew everyone out of the water. Described as amazing.
I hope said footage appears on youtube soon. There was also supposed to be new info on the Godzilla movie, too. I hope I see elaboration on that as well.
Actually, they're doing a media blackout now. What was shown at comiccon won't be shown for months

Out of subject, but still fits setting
This is official poster, don't deny me
