Oh my, is WoW dying or something?
This has nothing to do with WoW.
No, just because a game is free to play doesn't mean it's pay to win, look at Guild Wars 1, LoL, and TF2.
[editline]23rd February 2012[/editline]
Actually it kind of does, the whole MMO market is moving towards F2P, the fact that the biggest P2P MMO lost 1.8 million people in a year is just quickening the process.
I mean the game they are making, not the overall tend.

LoL isn't a good example since you have to buy the champions.
You can buy them with in-game currency, but you can get them faster with real money.
Didn't they say AGES ago that titan was going to be a social game?
I don't like free games any more.

I think free games are getting better than they were.
Used to almost all f2p games were totally pay to win but now you see a lot of them like Tribes: Ascend for example, that manage to keep a fair pricing model that's balanced but has incentive to pay.
No surprise, they need to compete with LoL and Dota 2.

the only thing that wow losing 1.8m players is showing is that people arent enjoying the content that blizzard is making in cataclysm it still has 10m not even close to a sign that blizz needs to jump ship to f2p games

Still, I think it means something that the player numbers have taken such a huge dip after they have been increasing over a million per year since release, its the first time they have really taken a hit. WoW is starting to get stale and the P2P model is slowly being pushed off the table due to F2P bringing in more players and more revenue.
Blizzard obviously need to start expanding their horizons in the MMO market if they want to continue to compete with the ever growing selection of F2P MMOs and MOBAs which appear much more favourable than paying £40 for a game + its expansions then £9 a month after that just to be able to play it.

yeah it means wow is 7 years old and then blizzard didnt deliver what people were expecting from cataclysm
