I'm pretty sure I need to replace my motherboard but I'd like to be sure before I buy something I can't return. From what my mom told me (it's her computer) when she turns on the computer a black or blue screen with diagonal lines running across it shows on the monitor and the only way to get rid of it is by resetting the computer; though when I tried it the monitor didn't even recognize that it was connected to the computer ("monitor going to sleep"). I put her RAM in my computer and it still ran fine so I think I can rule out memory issues, the fan in the power supply spins on start up and the led in the mouse and on the back of the power supply still turn on so I don't think it's the power supply either. I know it's not just the monitor either, that was the first thing I checked. So really, since it doesn't have a separate graphics card, the only thing left that could be broken is the motherboard?
It could be the monitor. If you could connect another monitor to the computer, you would know for sure. If it is the video adapter, if you have another one, sometimes the one on the motherboard will automatically shutdown when another one is in the machine.

I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about with video adapters though.
The computer has an open slot? Do you have a video card that will work in that slot? Put it in and try it. Sometimes it will override the motherboard.
