My school assigned me the task of creating a DvD cover with a photo manipulation program.
Now while most of you probably would tell me to use photoshop instead, I sadly can't. I would love to use photoshop, but it's not an option as I do not have a legitimate copy available to me, something that my teacher demanded if we were to use it instead of Gimp.
So could anyone give me some tips on how to get started with gimp?
I find this program terribly confusing.
There's a free 30 day trial version of Photoshop on their site?

Personally I find Paint.net better too.

I think his orders was to learn a picture manipulation program that we can use on a regular basis :(
Not sure what he would think about paint.net, he seems to be a bit narrow minded as to what kind of programs he accept as real tools.

I'll take a look at it when I return home, I appreciate your help.
My dad's being a nag though, so I have to go to my grandma's for lunch now.
I appreciate if anyone could leave some help here while I'm gone, and I'll be back to review it later :)
Get photoshop and i'll help you out tonight ;3
Just play around with the tools to figure out what they do, if you need help with some specific tool, there's an extensive manual available. You can also ask here if you need anything, i know my way around GIMP pretty well.
Also a bit of a tip: No matter which program you choose, I'm sure you'll love filters at first, that's ok, everybody goes through that stage. What you need to realise is while they can be very useful, they can't achieve everything.

While many people say GIMP is hard to learn, i don't really think it is. When you get an understanding of basic concepts like layers, selections, color channels, you can figure stuff out pretty easily with a bit of logical thinking. It's impossible to know everything about GIMP, but don't worry, there's usually multiple ways to do the same thing.
And don't let other people discourage you by saying you'll need photoshop. Unless you're going to get very serious about image editing, GIMP has more than enough power for amateur use. Seeing that you're a beginner it should do just fine, and you can't beat the price.

Thank you, could you perhaps guide me in how I could make something like this in gimp?

I managed to make the 278x192mm workspace size, but I'm having issues measuring out the actual 129mm pages and 14mm middle page from the excessive 3mm on each side meant as bleed to be allowed trimming.
Basically, how can I mark out my workspace to make the creation of this dvd cover more organized, while still keeping the excessive 3mm around it?
You can set up guides by just dragging them out from the ruler on the sides (click on the ruler and hold mouse button pressed, then move the guide to desired position). The coordinates of the current mouse position are in lower left corner, there is a menu right next to there that lets you select units of measurement (pixels, mm, inches, etc.). If you want you can also turn on guide snapping in by going to view>snap to guides.

Thank you, that worked :)
I think for quality CD label making free soft will be the worst variant. try this cd label creator
