• Camtasia Recorder causes whole system freeze.

Hardware exceeds the minimum suggested by a long shot. Drivers are up-to-date and have never crashed to my knowledge. x64 system. The recorder seems to lock up the entire PC, only solution is a reboot via the power button. I tried changing the codec to uncompressed, I'll see what that does. Any knowledge on what the issue is? It seems that others are having the same problem but it doesn't seem common.
Try the free version: http://camstudio.org/
Try the free version: http://camstudio.org/
That's an entirely different piece of software; I'm looking for a solution to the problem at hand if possible. Your suggestion is noted, though.
to my knowlege, camtasia holds the same functionality as camstudio and windows movie maker. also i want you to try the free version to see if it works. if it doesn't, the problem could lie in your harddrive.

Harddrives register fully functional and SMART comes back with good results. None of the hardware is failing.
Sorry i don't know how else a program can cause a system wide crash, you might be stuck with other screen recorders.

There is no entries in the event viewer except for unexpected power off. It's not a BSOD or anything, just a complete freeze up.
I get that while starting steam sometimes, but that's due to a known hdd issue.
I get that while starting steam sometimes, but that's due to a known hdd issue.
Doesn't the recording go to RAM though? Or is it actively put on the HDD? What other ways could I verify the drive is completely operable? I don't think anything is wrong with it; I've had well over two months of uninterrupted use until a Windows update required a reboot, so I think my machine is quite stable. One thing I noticed is that it may have something to do with Stereo Mix being the actively selected audio device, but I don't have the slightest clue as to why that would cause a complete system hang... [editline]9th July 2011[/editline] Also, just noticied that "The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the running state." was the last event listed in Event Viewer, which is only an information level event. However I've searched around and found that a few others have had the same 'hanging' type situation from it, right as the service started. Would disabling this possibly solve this situation and is it a safe service to disable?
To figure out if you have a problem with your hard drive is to try other recording software, which you already have so your hard drive is fine. I don't know what could possibly be causing the system freeze. You can run Memtest86 to see if your ram is working properly and you can rightclick on the drive you're saving the movies too and go into properties. Then press "Check disk for errors".

As for other programs like this; I don't use them to record 30+ minutes of screen captures, so that may be why I never notice it in anything else. System stability is perfect aside from using Camtasia though...
