I have made this petition to get Kepler 22b an official name, which will be named after a very lavish planet. They look alike as well. I petition to change the name of Kepler 22b to "Namek".
Ha, no. Planets shouldn't be named after anime shit. [editline]6th December 2015[/editline] Might aswell name earth japan.
I'd agree if the planet had green inhabitants
"They look alike aswell" Isn't the picture an artists representation?
This was the first thing that came to mind Unless Kepler-22B has ultra mega superbeing anime fights that can carve the landscape with a punch, it should remain Keppler-22B
If you're gonna rename a planet rename one of those shitty ones that only has a dumb serial code for a name, not one that already has a memorable one
Haha weeaboos.
Who cares if they name it Namek? At least it's easier to remember than Kepler-22B.
we should just ask it what it's name is don't be rude
Imagine colonising a planet that was named according to some centuries' old in-joke or meme.
Who cares if they name it Namek? At least it's easier to remember than Kepler-22B.
Kepler-22b is an incredibly iconic name imo way cooler than some weebo stuff as well anime sucks
Why not just shorten the name it already has to Kepler? The Planet Kepler, see rolls off the tongue.
Why not just shorten the name it already has to Kepler? The Planet Kepler, see rolls off the tongue.
because Kepler is the name of the space telescope and Kepler-22 is just one of many stars discovered by Kepler and Kepler-22b is a planet among other planets orbiting Kepler-22
Why not just shorten the name it already has to Kepler? The Planet Kepler, see rolls off the tongue.
Kepler is the name of the telescope, it's part of the codename
we should just ask it what it's name is don't be rude
take it to Starbucks the morning after and listen for what it tells the barista its name is
Dragonball is dank, no hate please
Keep it Keppler, it's a great name! And as we all know...
Kepler is the name of the telescope, it's part of the codename
Yeah so, can't it be both?
Imagine colonising a planet that was named according to some centuries' old in-joke or meme.
So like all the other planets in the Solar System?
So like all the other planets in the Solar System?
Yeah I was about to say this. If we can name one planet Uranus, surely we can name another planet Namek. I'm sure people wouldn't have an issue with naming an ice planet Hoth or desert planets Tatooine or Arrakis.
Yeah so, can't it be both?
I think it's not that convenient to name a planet Kepler since there's so many planets named Kepler-XXX. Maybe in the future when we find a planet of significant importance it will be called Kepler.
Um if they did rename it they wouldn't be changing the database name, it would still be kepler-22b in the databases, we name asteroids all kinds of stuff like apophis after the one episode of Stargate sg-1 where he tried to destroy the earth with an asteroid
I associate everything with anime.
There is literally nothing wrong with naming a planet "Namek." We've already started scraping the bottom of the deity-name barrel for Oort objects anyway, might as well open up to pop culture references.
Ha, no. Planets shouldn't be named after anime shit. [editline]6th December 2015[/editline] Might aswell name earth japan.
Well that doesn't make sense. Japan is a country, not a cartoon.
Everyone crying because it's anime needs to seriously shut the fuck up, we've already named something after Donald fucking Duck, I think it's safe to say keeping things "pure" is out the window. For reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minor_planets_named_after_people#Fictional_characters Oh, and the only reason why any of you are even remotely, remotely familiar with this is the Kepler telescope has found a lot of potentially maybe sorta possibly planets that could in theory kinda perhaps possibly have the conditions to support life. (maybe) There's fucking hundreds of Kepler planets. Hundreds. Kepler-22B isn't even special anyway, it's just some bullshit rock somewhere that we don't know even is there anymore, it could have been blasted to shit by a rogue asteroid or a marauding black hole or any number of astrological calamities. Name the son of a bitch Namek, it doesn't matter, there's like four fucking hundred Kepler planets we are not going to miss Kepler-22B at all.
There is literally nothing wrong with naming a planet "Namek." We've already started scraping the bottom of the deity-name barrel for Oort objects anyway, might as well open up to pop culture references.
If you really think about it mythology was pop culture at one time anyway. Like I said though, we've already taken to giving everything we see with silly ass names, there's craters on Pluto that were given Star Trek names as if that isn't any more geekier and lame than Dragonball Z. I say that as a Trekkie too.
There is literally nothing wrong with naming a planet "Namek." We can do better than 'Namek'. Besides, if we name it Namek we're basically condemning it to be exploded by an overpowered alien.
I think we should name the planet Bobobobo Bobobo because it probably looks more like his beautiful fro than Namek.
There are a lot of objects out there, naming one after a pop culture reference is hardly an issue. If such names and charts are actually preserved into the future, I'm guessing the pop culture origins will be forgotten anyways, and all you are left with is the name. Hell, there are more objects than names for them.
