So, does this have any improvements over the original, or is it a direct port? I didn't really like it (or any Final Fantasy games of the era, for that matter), but am willing to give it another shot if they improved upon anything.

This version removes the character of Squall and replaces him with one of those plastic dipping birds.
Still waiting on that FF IX port, square
don't do me dirty
8 was one of my favorites, except when my playstation kept crashing on that stupid spider run thing.
wish I had some money on steam to get it :(
I might actually get this, my favorite FF game, but then my original copy might shed a few tears knowing I'll never use it again :(

My disc got scratched and the game would always freeze in the cutscene where [sp]Squall gets impaled by an icicle[/sp]
Yeah, it froze right at the end of Disc 1 but before you were able to change disc.
Shit luck right there.
Fuck yes, Chocobo World is included.

If I remember, there was some controversy that the PC port had shittier-resolution backgrounds than the PS version.
If this is that port, only added to Steam, I'm not down for it. FF8 was a fantastic game IMO, but the lower resolution of the pre-rendered backgrounds will be fucking awful, especially on today's hardware.

That'd take effort from them when there's already PC ports of FF7 and FF8 that other companies did for them ages ago.

It'd be great to not have to use an emulator to run FFIX. Literally a dream come true.

Pretty sure they only looked worse because the character models rendered better on PC.
If the emulator is anything to go by, the quality of FFIX didn't really stand the test of time, but it's not unplayable, just obviously pixelated.
Ugh same problem as the VII steam release, it's got the shitty MIDI soundtrack.
And now just release FFX/X-2 HD quickly!
I believe it come's out March
This version removes the character of Squall and replaces him with one of those plastic dipping birds.
Distinct improvement.
Damn, that's awesome. Loved the port of FFVII already.

Man, I can't wait to see this in HD

This is great. However, you know what would've been even better?
An HD remake of FF V and VI. And I'm not talking DS-style 3d remakes, but a PSP-style remake. The FF IV CC looked absolutely glorious, and these 2 games really deserve to be known.

Also, I just came to realization that this "magic booster" thing is a totally gamebreaking tool that will allow you to breeze through the game by junctioning high-level magic to your stats.
I rather have them port Kingdom Hearts before they port any more final fantasy games :>

Yeah they did the same to 7 with the "booster" thing they did, seems to me like however, it's aimed at people who just want to get through the story, and i have no issues for peopleto breeze through it, tis a pretty long game regardless.
That said, Crysis Core was gorgeous, would love previous FF games like that.
to anyone who got FFVII on Steam before they fixed the music did you need to restart the game if you wanted the fixed music did it do right away.? so you didn't have to to restart or can you pick MIDI or original every time.?
8 is so fucking bad.
I can forgive the terrible characters, the nonsensical plot and the downright unappealing aesthetics, but the retarded draw magic system is so fucking bad it makes me retch. It slows down an already slow game and prolongs an already long game. It makes it grindier than it already is, it doesn't contribute anything decent to the game/franchise.
Just gonna sit here and wait for IX
