Okay nintendo, up your marketing game, now. Seriously Rebrand the console as the Wii 2 if you have to honestly, anything.
That's sort of what I'm still curious about. The Wii U came out and they just... didn't market it. At all. No TV ads, no radio, nothing in the pages of the WSJ or NYT (for all the dads to see, and then buy for little Jimmy for Christmas.) Marketing is half the reason people still think the Wii U is an addon for the Wii! You can see that in the fact that more Wii U Gamepads were purchased last holiday season than consoles, and I'm sure a fair bit of those were not replacements. Nintendo used to understand advertising. They knew how to run a business. Back in the 80s and 90s, they were known for their marketing. Now, hopefully, they can make a turnaround. Sony has. Nissan did. A lot of Japanese companies tend to go through this phase of stagnation, before picking back up. We can only hope Nintendo does the same.
Marketing is expensive. How will they convince the masses who has been glued to their iPads and iPhones for so long into buying the WiiU? It's too late to get the casual audience now.

Have you noticed how, after poor sales numbers with the PS3, they have completely reversed their position? Nintendo needs to do the same. Make gamers WANT to buy the Wii U, if for nothing else than it having really good games. They can pull out of this, but I think it might contradict their "vision."
Casual and kiddy games don't sell well on consoles anymore. Time for Nintendo to go back to their roots.
Maybe if the stop calling it an upgrade in their commercials and instead say it's an entirely new console they might actually sell some more to the casual audience who were there biggest buyer's for the wii. I was at my neighbor's once for new year's and there were two parents there talking about how there kids were wanting a WII U but they said "why would I pay so much for a screen to use with the wii?". (or something along those lines) I had to explain to them that it was an entirely different console to the WII U. They thought when the commercials said that the WII U was an upgrade they thought the game pad was the "upgrade".
Okay nintendo, up your marketing game, now. Seriously Rebrand the console as the Wii 2 if you have to honestly, anything.
Oh yeah, it must be the name! That's why the Xbox One is doing so badly, right?
Casual and kiddy games don't sell well on consoles anymore. Some of the games are bright and colorful, but they are not specifically for kids.
I can't believe the Xbox One of all things is outselling the Wii U, especially considering the massive negative press of anti-consumerism that surrounded it. Is even that seriously not as bad in the eyes of gamers as "Nintendo" branding, when the whole reason PS4 was successful in the first place is all the "not as bad as the Xbone" hype? I can't believe success in this industry anymore rides on the whims of people as fickle and gullible as modern gamers.
Its a shame, I love my Wii U, it's a great console.
Casual and kiddy games don't sell well on consoles anymore. Time for Nintendo to go back to their roots.
First of all, first-party titles don't make a console, like it or not. The games Nintendo decides to make have nothing to do with the sales of their consoles. Also, Fire Emblem and Ninja Gaiden are far from "casual and kiddy". Second, "casual and kiddy" games are Nintendo's roots, unless you want them to go back to making hanafuda cards
Oh yeah, it must be the name! That's why the Xbox One is doing so badly, right?
I wasn't saying that's the SOLE problem but it is definitely part of the problem, the fact that nobody knows what it is and that there's been little to no advertising doesn't help the fact that it's name makes it sound like an add-on.
Well, I can't say that there are any amazing games out for it yet. STILL. 2D Mario (Ala "New" Super Mario Bros. Whatever) is stale as heck and they're starting to drift into the same pattern with the 3D series. Give us the next 64/Sunshine/Galaxy and I'll gladly buy it. Not interested in Pikmin, and while I do want Wind Waker HD, it's just a remake, so unfortunately none of the hit games out for it now warrant me getting the console, despite me siding very much with Nintendo. Call me when Smash Brothers or the next gen Mario/LoZ/Kirby game comes out. It doesn't help that their marketing thus far is blundering, for reasons said before.
Are you forgetting Super Mario 3D World?
Like I said, it looks like the 3D series might be suffering the same fate as the 2D "New" Series. Plus those games go by relatively quickly. I'm not gonna pay 60 bucks for a game I can 100% in a single day.
Good luck getting 100% in 3D World in a day.

At least you didn't say something stupid like "I'd rather spend my money in a menu-driven grindfest that takes me weeks to 100% because that'd be SOOOOOOO much fun"

Since they didn't buy another console, that console isn't successful. What else would success ride on, exactly?
Good luck getting 100% in 3D World in a day.
Yeah, there are tons of green stars to collect in order to [sp]unlock many new levels after you finish the game[/sp], i still need to reach 230 stars

Can't say I'm fond of another final boss "fight" where all you have to do is avoid being hit by Bowser and stage hazards while scaling the course. Not my jive. v(' <')v
If you're gonna have fun I don't see the problem. At least you didn't say something stupid like "I'd rather spend my money in a menu-driven grindfest that takes me weeks to 100% because that'd be SOOOOOOO much fun"
I'd rather have the middle ground. Not short, but not long due to grindfests. I'm pretty sure that's the golden ticket. I'd rather pay for a game that has replay-ability, if anything. And if I learned anything from any of the "New" Super Mario games or 3D Land, it doesn't look like I'd be getting that.
I'm not a console user but if I was, and the Wii U and Xbone were my only options, I would pick the Xbone. It's the one that has the selection of games I'm actually interested. I'm not into Nintendo's 60+ year old franchises. I never grew up with them, and while I respect the quality that they have in them, they just don't produce even an ounce of interest in me. Maybe if the Wii U had a better selection of third-party titles I might be more inclined to side with it - but it doesn't. Sorry but endless streams of Mario, Zelda, DK, and all those other un-dieing franchises just don't interest me. Like, at all.
You're really missing out on a lot there, I genuinely feel sorry for you if you can't derive enjoyment from any of those games
