The HULC in testing (Lockheed Martin)
The US Military is trialling a robotic suit aimed at transforming soldiers into super-human war machines.
Designers at Lockheed Martin claim their Human Universal Load Carrier, or HULC will allow soldiers to carry loads up to 90kg for over 20km on a single charge.
The firm's promotional material says fighters will be able to transport the large weights because "loads are transferred to the ground through powered titanium legs without loss of mobility".
This means users should feel as if they are not even wearing the Ironman style suit, because it supports its own weight, experts added.
The HULCs, currently being trialled by the US Military, will also allow users to run at 11km/h for long periods over rough terrain while wearing a heavy backpack.
They also feature a "burst mode" which lifts the pace to 16km/h but sacrifices distance.
The wearable exo-skeleton is not operated by a joystick or control mechanism and Lockheed says it simply goes where the user wants it to go.
It is unclear how far this technology is from being tested on the battlefield.
Besides its military use, such technology could be incorporated to helping removalists carry heavier loads and people with spinal injuries walk again.
Can't wait for the future of combat to be soldiers sprinting around at bicycle speeds with light machine guns.
Stalker projected that there would be a limited run of these completed by 2012, right?

Nah. We have super tanks now.

Or well. South Korea has super tanks.
[editline]15th July 2011[/editline]
Seriously they have tanks that can lean.
[editline]15th July 2011[/editline]
Their tank the black panther is incredible.
forgive me, but it doesn't look like it offers much protection
what about if they added some kind of metal frame around some parts, would it not be more practical then an offer more protection?
i'm not talking about a full on suit.. just... wider parts to cover the flesh.

In reality, those Power Armor suits would be impossible to move in, they weigh that much.

I believe that was Japan's tank, the brand new Type 10:

they are powered..
i'm guessing by a battery pack that helps them walk...
also explains why they add 1+ strength

It isn't armour, its to help carry shit.

"Just a metal frame" wont stop a bullet, and will add unnecessary load.
This is less for protection and more for mobility/speed.

wasn't thinking bullets.
thinking more, debris and shrapnel

You're still thinking that it is some kind of power armour. It's just there to help them carry a heavy load without losing running speed.

fair enough...
i still want one.

Shrapnel goes through the armor plating on a HMMWV, you think a portable device will stop it?

i'll admit, i don't know enough about the current state of battlefields to design armour for troops
i'm just thinking out loud :saddowns:

S'okay, we're all friends
Even though it's not designed to it would offer SOME protection in very rare circumstances. I mean you hear stories about people surviving because they got shot by a bullet which was like 5 millimetres off of hitting an artery. Or because the bullet was deflected slightly, but just enough to save someone's life by a tiny metal clip on their helmet or something like that.
There WILL be some lucky sod at some point in the future who takes a direct hit to one of those thin, metal leg braces and it'll turn out that it saved his life because, had it not been there, it'd have hit an artery.
It may not be designed for it, but it will offer a very small degree of protection for a very small number of lucky people.

Yeah. But what if they fall and break something.
Imagine one of these things shorting out or whatever, then folding double and ripping the poor sod's leg clean off at the knee.

ironman 2 springs to mind.
If you wore one of these while nude could you jump 40 feet in the air?

Now you're thinking with portals.
Now you're thinking with portals.
I don't get it.
I don't get it.
look at what he quoted, it says "portable device"
handheld portal device
And it will never get used by the US army because it's run by a load of cheap bastards.

It's still dumb.
It's still dumb.
meh..
I wonder what would happen if you strapped a generator to a soldier wearing one of these
