(Reuters) - China and Russia signed a $400-billion gas supply deal on Wednesday, securing the world's top energy user a major source of cleaner fuel and opening up a new market for Moscow as it risks losing European customers over the Ukraine crisis.
The long-awaited agreement is a political triumph for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is courting partners in Asia as those in Europe and the United States seek to isolate him over Moscow's annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
Commercially, much depends on the price and other terms of the contract, which has been more than a decade in the making. China had the upper hand as negotiations entered their final phase, aware of Putin's face-off with the West.
Well, guess we better start investing in that green energy now. If the planet dying won't make us, maybe we actually will to distance ourselves from Russia.

"Ok. Someone else will. It is fossil fuels, after all. "
Of course sanctions wouldn't work out. How else would it go?
"Thats not how it works"
lol
CCTV(China's govt run news station)
just minutes ago showed news about the signed deal, saying it's gonna get into effect in2018.
after that, they showed their past joint millitary drills with russia, wich is to supply 6 ships for an upcomming exercise.
Then they go on to show how how china has suffered some 1.6 million cyber attacks from the usa and things like that.
wtf is going on

Yeah, it was really funny how kitchen politicians of Facepunch told till the very end that China will not befriend Russia at all.

This isn't befriending Russia, because they're still not friends.
China is doing what will make it more money, this doesn't mean China and Russia are slowly forming a bloc. But I love how you kitchen politicians have such a mastery over politics that you have seen past the half-century old split between the two.

To be honest, European Nations should've done this immediately, or started investing in American Natural Gas production.
Now most of Europe is suffering from its own hubris that it can avoid getting hurt by other nations.
Harper's probably going to be drinking again tonight. Almost all our natural gas infrastructure construction was going towards selling to china. This basically kills that deal.
Chinese government are very smart and patient bunch, I absolutely expect them to just wait until all the infrastructure is up and running, and then when Europe will move off from Russian gas - start bargaining the costs and stuff. Because Gazprom won't have anyone else to sell its product to and will have to comply.
This will help alleviate the effects of the sanctions, but Russia still needs Europe
The gas will be transported along a new pipeline linking Siberian gas fields to China's main consumption centres near its coast. Russia will begin delivering from 2018, building up gradually to 38 billion cubic metres (bcm) a year.
...
The contract with CNPC does not mean Russia is giving up on Europe. Last year, Gazprom supplied western Europe and Turkey with over 160 bcm of gas, dwarfing intended deliveries to China.
