So I built my computer what back when, having no intention of ever doing SLI. I have a GTX 470 and an AM3+ mobo. The mobo has 1 PCEx16.0 and 1 PCEx8.0, would it be worth it to buy say, a 460 or another 470 and run SLI with the second in x8 (I'm not sure if I did sli if it would run both in x8 but either way would it be worth it)? Obviously I've never SLI'd/Crossfired so bare with me. I was also wondering if I could get a 6970 and would it be on par with the 570 (my resolution is 1600x900 if that helps)? I want to get ready for BF3 and other intensive games.
You can SLI another 470 (not 460) with your current 470 and it will be more beneficial price and performance wise than getting a 6970/570, give us your speccy or motherboard just so we can confirm but from the sounds of it the motherboard supports 16+8 or 8+8 SLI which will not bottleneck the cards at all. Your biggest problem really is getting another 470 which might prove difficult. Make sure your power supply is up to it too.
I have a Cooler Master 750 watt PSU so I think I'm good, why would getting another 470 be difficult? I also could have sworn that Nvidia cards could SLI with the same hundred series (400, 500 etc.) [editline]6th September 2011[/editline] I see your point on the 470 being difficult to find, would it be worth it to get a used one? I was looking at this one on Ebay and it seems to be a good deal http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-NVIDIA-GEFORCE-GTX-470-VIDEO-CARD-012-P3-1470-AR-/180715188893?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a1376f29d#ht_2007wt_1396

That's a pretty terrible deal by any standard. You could spend $20 more and get a GTX560 or HD6870 brand new with a 3-5 year warranty from the manufacturer.

I'm debating on if I should wait until the 600 series comes out and get one of those
He's just speaking of the deal, just hold out until you can find a 470 for a good price.
He's just speaking of the deal, just hold out until you can find a 470 for a good price.
I suppose but I've been looking at the 560 and it seems to be better than my 470. I'm curious if I should get that, try and find a 470 for a good price, or wait till 600 series cards come out. [editline]7th September 2011[/editline] If another 470 truly is the best option, where should I get it? Well, 2 470s SLI'd is no doubt much better performance than a single 560 TI, I wouldn't even think a 470 to a 560 TI would be enough performance to warrant an upgrade.

x8 slots are fine for 2 470s I suggest if you can't find a 470, then don't upgrade at all - 470 -> 560 isn't worth at all in my opinion you can get a new PNY 470 for $250, or you can go for this used Gigabyte 470 for $200
Even in x16 and x8, or x8 and x8? Also where should I get one? From any one of those stores?
Yep. AFAIK 580s aren't even bottlenecked by PCI-E 2.0 x8 slots. Is this worth the upgrade from a Radeon 5770? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-msi-hd-6870-oc-hawk-with-twinfrozer-iii-4200mhz-gddr5-gpu-930mhz-1120-stream-processors-dvi-hdmi I'm guessing the free Dirt3 game offer is fucked now though.
it's better than the 5770, you dont have to get the twin frozr 3 though, i have a sapphire that runs cool
Well my reason for the Twin Frozr was for it to produce less noise but thinking about it again, it may be louder. Any opinions?
Or you can wait for EVGA to add more B stock 470s http://www.evga.com/products/prodlist.asp?switch=20
Well my reason for the Twin Frozr was for it to produce less noise but thinking about it again, it may be louder. Any opinions?
mime doesn't produce any noise at all, I barely hear my computer when it's running
Or you can wait for EVGA to add more B stock 470s http://www.evga.com/products/prodlist.asp?switch=20
Would it be best to wait for this or get this used Gigabyte? The Gigabyte seems like a good deal and I could get it now as opposed to waiting an unknown period of time for the B stock 470
Or you can wait for EVGA to add more B stock 470s http://www.evga.com/products/prodlist.asp?switch=20
There's some here: http://eu.evga.com/products/prodlist.asp?family=GeForce%20400%20Series%20Family Which one? [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] Oh wait, those are only 460's. [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] They ain't any cheaper anyway. [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] This looks good: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/254483

Also, I would contact EVGA and ask them if they have a ETA on them. If they give you a soon date, then I would wait for sure. That's not a Gigabyte, it's a Galaxy.
Even in x16 and x8, or x8 and x8? Also where should I get one? From any one of those stores?
Especially on the newer 1155 boards the difference between 16x and 8x 8x with SLI is so small less than a hundredth of a percent I think. And even if it was 1% slower, that's not a tangible difference you would see or feel. Only with benchmark numbers would you know.
