The purpose of the G.I.R.L. Scholarship Program is to inspire women across the world to get involved in the gaming industry and open doors for those going into creative and applied arts. One chosen winner from the G.I.R.L. Game Design Competition will win a $10,000 scholarship to put towards college funding. Winners also get to experience a 10-week paid internship with Sony Online Entertainment in San Diego. "At SOE, we believe that diversity is one of our keys to success and it is truly woven into the fabric of who we are as a company," says Laura Naviaux, Senior Vice President of Global Sales & Marketing at Sony Online Entertainment. "We want to help make the games industry even that much more approachable and our goal with the G.I.R.L. Scholarship is to provide an easy way to usher even more women into the industry."
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/02/21/sony-online-entertainment-is-now-accepting-apps-for-g-i-r-l-scholarship.aspx
Does it really matter how many women or men are in an industry? I don't see it as discrimination, I see it as who is interested in the industry. It shouldn't matter what sex they are, as long as they are good.
I bet this it's because of this: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1248708
That image is hilarious that girl is just applying a random green brush to that image.
That image is hilarious that girl is just applying a random green brush to that image.
Her facial expression makes it even better.
This is a good idea, but terrible naming scheme

This scholarship has been around since 2008. Just poor timing with the PS4 announcement complaints that makes it look like they're covering their asses.
Fucking Anita.

If there aren't many women in the game industry it means there's a lot of talented people who could be helping out.

Ahhh the Dell Ultrasharp... a staple of the games industry.

Good on them, diversity is really important when it comes to art. If more women joined the field, we'd have a lot of cool new viewpoints and styles of storytelling

Someone make this a photoshop contest
Thats so sexist, How dare Sony put out for women but not men.
Good on them. I have a friend who's here at the same college as me doing game design, this is awesome for her.
oh man summer internship at sony sounds so fucking cool
I misinterpreted

When there is a disproportionately less one gender, there is something wrong in the industry. There was this one talented professor and researcher who got a sex change (female to male) and he doesn't look even slightly like a women. And guess what? He says the way he is treated is so much better. [editline]23rd February 2013[/editline] I'm too lazy to dig up the super detail New York Times article on it. I remember reading it in a sociology textbook for a Sociology class I took last year

How many women compared to men play videogames? Not many, and the reason for that is not massive discrimination. Get the best people into the industry, regardless of gender/race/physical characteristics.
oh man summer internship at sony sounds so fucking cool
Little do you know they've taken The Tester and turned it into their standard interview process
Not really. Programming and game design is boring as shit, and all you'd probably do is fetch coffee anyways
Any work in an office is boring as shit but it pays better than being a sack boy and it helps get into a career

Between the pathetic sexualization of many female characters and the torrents of abuse they get from guys online, gaming is a real shithole for the fairer gender
Any work in an office is boring as shit but it pays better than being a sack boy and it helps get into a career
I don't know where you got the idea that game development pays well. You work long hours, often without pay, and have little to no creative expression or freedom. Plus many programmers burn out due to the stress of programming and debugging/looking through thousands of lines of code for one little error
Not really. Programming and game design is boring as shit, and all you'd probably do is fetch coffee anyways
programming and game design are only boring as shit if you aren't interested in programming and game design. i mean most people would probably be bored out of their minds but a few people would probably be incredibly excited to be able to see what it's like in the industry. Damnit. This would be a perfect chance for me to get a look into the industry I've always wanted to work for, and they give it to women only.

For example, you say that debugging is boring, there are swathes of people who would disagree with you vehemently.
