Holy shit, what a surprise: Blizzard officially shelves TDM for Diablo III (but not dueling)

Blizzard announced player-versus-player modes for Diablo 3 years before the game actually released, but delayed the release of those modes for months into 2012. With days to go until 2013, Blizzard has killed the game's Team Deathmatch mode.
Diablo 3 is unfinished. Blizzard promised the game would release with player-versus-player modes, then said those modes would be released shortly after the game in 2012. With days left in the year, those modes still haven’t been released and now Blizzard is saying one of those modes won’t ship at all.
There will be no Team Deathmatch in Diablo 3. In a Thursday update on the official Diablo 3 website, director Jay Wilson explained why PvP modes for the game haven’t been released yet, how far along in development they are, and why there will no longer be Team Deathmatch in the game.
“Our original intent with PvP for Diablo 3 was to profide more formal support for the dueling community that existed in Diablo 2,” said Wilson, “This is how Team Deathmatch mode emerged, and it’s been instrumental in making a lot of improvements to Diablo 3. But in continuing to develop this mode, playtest it, and put it infront of other developers within the company, we’ve found that it falls short of our expectations for a high-quality Blizzard experience.”
“For us it comes to a few issues, one of which is depth. Simply fighting each other with no other objective or choices to make gets old relatively quickly,” Wilson went on, “Another is class balance. Like Diablo 2, Diablo 3 was designed to be a PvE-first kind of game, where we never compromised on player abilities in the name of future PvP balance.”
While dueling will make it into the game with patch 1.0.7 at an unspecified date in 2013, Team Deathmatch will not. Wilson explained that the studio plans to replace it with something and may eventually release the current version at some point, but for now there will be no Team Deathmatch.
Few games better represented the modern video game industry in 2012 than Blizzard’s Diablo 3. Every aspect of the business is in this sequel.
The unchanging reliance on franchises for big sales; the volatile nature of monetizing games; piracy protection; the difficulty of embracing creativity while also satisfying an audience in constant dialogue with the creators; and the shifting expectations for single player games. Love it or hate it, Diablo 3 is the essential modern game, a lavish product with a severe identity crisis. It’s also been a changing game, updated consistently since its release despite more than four years of development and balancing.

not like d3 was a good game to begin with
the games not what we anted, wanyway
I thought the game was cool, but one of the reason I bought it was just because of the PvP that they said the would add........
I don't play Diablo 3 but duelling sounds infinitely more boring than TDM in this type of games.
Maybe they should be giving people refunds who request them because of this. I certainly didn't buy it thinking that my only form of PVP would be dueling. Which is DUMB.

technically, anyone who bought diablo 3 bought it for the PvP Deathmatch. There were blog posts about it, it was promised and advertised for july/august. They literally backstabbed people who bought this game. It's not even a matter of entitlement, they're just not keeping their promises despite being a multi-billion dollar developer.
Jay Wilson and whatever "game director" made all the wrong decisions on this game should get the fuck out, seriously.

fuck you Jay and your shit team for removing this
diablo 3 had so much potential, every post I see about it getting destroyed more and more hurts me
If they advertised the pvp as a part of the game, you could arguably get a pretty solid case for refunds in most of the EU, and definitely in the UK. I've not bothered with D3, but it sounds like a pretty easy case with the sale of goods act 1979.
PVP is still coming, just not this particular TDM mode. They are working on something more like Diablo.
I am a bit amazed how it took them so long to add any pvp. I don't believe balancing stuff for pvp took that long.
I am a bit amazed people still care about D3
People still play diablo 3?

Didn't they recently backpedal too and said they are making it, but from scratch and in the different direction from what was on the PTR?

Blizzard doesn't drop support to most of there games, they still patch Warceaft 3 and Starcraft 1.
Please tell me if you can actually get a refund for this. Diablo 3 was a huge regret for me.
Please tell me if you can actually get a refund for this. Diablo 3 was a huge regret for me.
Depends on when you bought it. If more than 30 days ago then most likely not. If you're in EU you can theoretically claim false advertising but first you need to find someone who will listen to you. Is all the hassle worth 50-something bucks/euros?

I guarantee you that there is a lawyer ready to make a career opening move by filing a class action lawsuit against a billion dollar company.
That sort of stuff isn't mere padding for your credentials. If you pull somethng like that off, your career is going far.
PVP is still coming, just not this particular TDM mode. They are working on something more like Diablo.
yeah, chances are they're making something that will work with just A,B,X, and Y buttons :v:
just like they did with the skills system

This case has no value.
Blizz didn't promise this specific TDM mode, they just promised pvp.

That's one of the main points of class action.
As to whether it has merrits based off of what they claimed, I don't actually know. If they mentioned deathmatch and explained what that is at all, there is strong potential for a case.
technically, anyone who bought diablo 3 bought it for the PvP Deathmatch.
That's a nice generalization you have there.

I don't even know how this is relevant to what I said.

They only mentioned PVP. Specific TDM was never advertised as a feature, merely as a possible addition in the future. They did not go "buy this game, there's going to be tdm later"
I own it and haven't started it in months. It was the first diablo game I've ever played and sure the first two playthroughs where great. But seriously you expect me to fucking play the same game OVER AND OVER in an attempt to grind fest my character to be able to play the SAME FUCKING LEVELS just on harder difficulty? Lol fuck off blizzard.

The problem is that it's not fun to replay. I replayed D2 countless times both offline and online. D3 on the other hand doesn't have that charm.

Could be worth a refund, though there's a similar related thought in my mind; if the feature was touted as going to be in the product, d'you think it's worth a class-action or whatever that thing is called?
I enjoyed Diablo 3 but definitely didn't play it as long as D2, which lasted me years, or even Titan Quest, which similarly has lasted a couple years now worth of entertainment. The gameplay isn't radically different but it seems to lack that spark that makes you want to keep playing.

The closest thing they have said is that eventually PVP will be included with the game, something that their stance hasn't changed on. They prototyped a TDM mode for awhile, too long if you ask me, then canceled it for something else, reinforcing the fact that whatever comes up will be free.
It smacks of poor development decisions, misinformation, and a terrible use of manhours and resources, but it's hardly something you can sue over, atleast I think.
The PvP blogpost was the thing that decided if I was gonna stick around.
Cashed out last night with my WD, fuck D3, ill wait to see if the expansion is any good.

The ARPG genre is meant to be a grindfest, all of these types are games are grindy.

I'm betting on "okay at best" with a $40 price tag.
