• Going to London in 10 Hours. Tips /Advice?
    112 replies, posted
Hello FP. In about 10 hours, I'm going to be going outside of this country for the first time and make a week-long trip in London. I'm very fortunate that my father decided to bring me along for a business trip, and am very excited to go! However, I don't want to wind up at really overly-priced places or get ripped off because of my ignorance. But at the same time, I don't want to go around and be a douche-bag American tourist and just make everyone Londoner's life miserable. Anything I shouldn't talk about? What about tip? Is there certain areas to avoid? Anything else that would be helpful to know? I'm not asking for a tour guide, just a little bit of advice on London. Thanks.

Find the time zone differences and sleep at a time that would prepare you.

you will die a painful death by chav.
Usually I skip a day worth of sleep then sleep according to my sleep schedule in the time zone I travel to.
Don't swim in the Thames.
Get an oyster card or week long travel card for cheaper travel (with the travel card you get infinite bus, tube and tram rides if you've got the right zone on your card) Make sure you see all the major touristy stuff during the week, earlier in the day the better Don't go and see the changing of the guard at buckingham palace - it's crap Don't talk to people on the tube, we don't want to talk to anyone on the way to and from work It might be hot here at the moment and it might be rainy or it might be both Don't eat in the touristy areas, you'll get ripped off Don't mind the grumpy locals, we're always like that, it's not because of you Don't use black cabs, get yourself a tube map and/or ask bus drivers when you get on, public transport in london is actually very good no matter what anyone will tell you (apart from at the weekends when tube lines get shut for maintenance). [editline]07:11PM[/editline] Tipping here is 10%, but if you're from the US people may expect more (sorry, but you guys made a rod for your own back there)
Thanks for the advice guys. Anything else I should know?
Maybe a good idea if you tell us what you're thinking about seeing, that way we can let you down gently now instead of you getting all bummed when you see XYZ in the flesh and realise it's crap?!
First time you ride the tube and you'll want to go on the yellow circle line, you'll accidentally get on a green train. Just step out on the next station and get on a yellow one.
Go to Brixton.
What liquid_phase said, what sort of things are you wanting to do? Want pubs, restaurants, attractions, tourist spots? Do you know where's you're going to be staying?
remember in europe we have only 12 days in a month, however we have 31 months a year.
Look out for swarms of chavs, stay away from dark allyways and shops that sell cheap booze.
Go to Brixton.
Don't. Unless you want death by a knife.
Midget prostitutes are the best.
Go around mocking their accents, it's cool man, seriously. No, in all seriousness just relax man, also buy a fuckton of candy, assuming you're from the US, they have some pretty awesome candy over there that we don't have. Also try to smuggles some mt dew over there, use it to barter.
Try not to look too much like a tourist. Or a chav.
Use protection, don't want anything bad to happen.
We call them sweets, but try these sweets called Haribo's. THEY'RE DE SHIZA
We call them sweets, but try these sweets called Haribo's. THEY'RE DE SHIZA
I'm pretty sure you can get them in USA too...
Keep your head down or you will get stabbed

Check out London Dungeon. It's awesome to stand in a dark corner and scare the living daylights out of people walking by. It's especially effective in the dungeon with the flickering lights.

Anyone living in the London area want me to bring them some Moutian Dew? If so, in Bottles or cans?
Oh, and if you wan't to visit the best war-museum ever, visit the Imperial War museum. It kicks ass!
How old are you, if you don't mind me asking? If you're old enough, head to some bars in Shoreditch. That's where I'm gonna be tomorrow. Lovely area.
Don't make a piece sign with your fingers.
