This sound card requires additional power and i've never really fitted anything into a PC except for RAM, so I was careful with this.
I had a Molex connector from my PSU and used the "molex to floppy adaptor" that came in the box, although i'm unsure whether I put the cable into the card the right way.. is there only one way this connection can go on the card? Because I was a bit nervous that I had put it on the wrong way as I tried to slightly pull it off but it couldn't, I didn't want to break it. Although, pushing it even more on, it seemed to fit.
At the back of my PC where the card is, coming out of the MIC jack, I see a red light so surely this is connected right? The installation asked me whether I attached it and I said "yes" and it didn't refuse me..
I have x-540, mid-range 5.1 speakers but the sound doesn't sound as refined as my on-board audio. I have set the quality high on both the "ASUS control panel" and the standard windows one.
I do get 5.1 surround sound but the quality somehow doesn't sound as good.. any help?
99% sure it doesn't work at all without that power connection, try fiddling with the settings

Ah, I was thinking this but wondered whether the power connection would enable full sound quality.
So, as you say it's probably my settings but I have no idea what KHz to set it to, it is currently on 192 but i'm unsure whether this is the problem.
What sort of settings could I change?

Set it to 24-bit 48000hz in Windows (due to a driver bug most features don't work with anything higher) and PCM 192KHz in the Xonar panel

Thanks. I'll check this out as it's getting late now, up early so i'm off.
There was something else I wanted to ask but i've forgot, i'll try remember tomorrow :v:
Oh yeah, why does this card lack so much bass? Even my on-board sound has much better bass..

Fiddle with the equaliser, you probably had bass boost on or something
I found these helped - http://brainbit.wordpress.com/2010/07/19/asus-xonar-unified-drivers/
It doesn't sound so tinny, and I boosted in the EQ; 30 the most 60 a bit less, 120 lesser.
I'll keep giving it a test. I downloaded some IMAX videos in wmv, however I found the centre speaker was non existant, as were the rear speakers.. only "matrix" button on the x540's made it come out of every speaker but that isn't surround sound. I have no idea why. Possibly the file format? Or not the right codec? I press test and they come out of each speaker individually.
