While the app is set to arrive for Android sometime this month, the APK file has found its way to the Internet. The app, which can be downloaded and installed on any phone running Android 4.4 and above, brings Microsoft's personal digital assistant the billion or so users of Android. Cortana is Microsoft's version of Siri and Google Now and seeing that the digital assistant will be shipping with Windows 10 and Microsoft hopes that OS will reach a billion users within the next three years, the platform is about to expand its user base by a boat load of users. By also releasing this app for Android and iOS, Cortana is set to be the most widely distributed digital assistant on the market.
why would anyone use cortana over siri or google now? [editline]18th July 2015[/editline] especially on their respective devices
why would anyone use cortana over siri or google now? [editline]18th July 2015[/editline] especially on their respective devices
If she can understand my accented "Cortana" better than Android's "OK Google" I'm sold.
Since linking (semi-)directly to the leaked APK would likely fall under the warez rule (hence using Neowin instead of say Android Police), here's some screenshots on a Galaxy S4 (Canadian/Mexican model): [t]http://i.imgur.com/9AcZnnT.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/eZKCMmW.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/3r9hhz6.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/R9AvlIp.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/ZdeDcSJ.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/bcKnOdh.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/fOuIYmD.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/v6SBuiF.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/rGcwdoM.png?1[/t] That's right, if you ask her "why should I buy this phone", she'll give you presumably carried over reasons from Windows Phone (I'd laugh if I saw "integrated Office and OneDrive" on an Android phone, but mind you that's a possibility now with the Samsung Galaxy S6). One thing that I have noted is if you ask her about rivals ("what do you think about Siri", "what do you think about Google", etc), she's seemingly uncooperative. If you want me to try some questions, go ahead.
I hope it is eventually available on older Android versions, but I won't hold my breath. I just can't seem to part with my S2.
The long list of permissions really makes me uneasy. But I guess it needs all of it.
Interesting. Competition is good, so I'll be sure to keep an eye on it.
Everything I do causes it to crash :v:
The long list of permissions really makes me uneasy. But I guess it needs all of it.
Considering it can call people in your address book, make calls and texts, search your phone's storage, use your microphone, take pictures, etc. It's not a real surprise.
Might want to get a custom rom
And this is why I like Android. Even when your manufacturer stops supplying updates, you can still hop even further with a custom ROM. On iOS, you're screwed when Apple stops supplying updates - not even jailbreaking can get you out.

I've never had so many issues rooting an Android device till I had my current phone. :v:

"Where is Master Chief?" "That's classified."
I'm assuming it's not voiced by Jen Taylor?

Looks like the site that had the leak is down. Must've been jnprepa all unprepared for the traffic.
Some more screenshots of how Cortana reminds you on Lollipop: [t]http://i.imgur.com/I637Wuu.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/MUz2YEu.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/W0ARrNl.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/awPlDS1.png[/t] Reminders were sort of demonstrated in the Phone Companion app for a small snippet. Actions aren't fully voice assisted as after you ask Cortana to remind you/text someone, you will need to use touch (or worst case scenario but still possible with USB OTG: a mouse) to confirm or cancel, as well as to fill in details if you didn't specify what it is you wanted. [t]http://i.imgur.com/9QyntHU.png[/t] I'll check out how notifications work on a Galaxy Tab 3 (which so far only supports KitKat) in a while, but I expect it'll just be the ticker alert.
Is this considered warez? I do want it on my Galaxy Alpha.
Is this considered warez? I do want it on my Galaxy Alpha.
Possibly (AKA why I used Neowin for their "let's not leak directly to leaks" stance they typically use with Windows builds), but I'll ask if leaked APKs from a technically semi-public beta test program (which requires applying) fall under warez.
why would anyone use cortana over siri or google now? [editline]18th July 2015[/editline] especially on their respective devices
Because Microsoft wants people one their services. What better way for that than to branch it onto other big devices and push it? Especially with how integrated Cortana is into Windows 10.
I know it's a leaked beta but it looks dumb on a 1440p screen. [t]http://i.imgur.com/PmI9pBi.png[/t] The borders are way too big, my dpi is only 560.
Does the feedback button work? Good time to test it
Yeah it does, it's the first thing I did.
why would anyone use cortana over siri or google now? [editline]18th July 2015[/editline] especially on their respective devices
My phone can do a google search through voice, that's it. I have a perfectly good reason to get this, because my phone doesn't have anything like this officially. [editline]18th July 2015[/editline]
it is
Mine has no voice for some reason. It's really pissing me off, I went through the trouble of typing in "Swag Master Stan" and I want her to fucking recognize it, damnit. [editline]a[/editline] Wait no, it worked when I asked why I should buy the phone. Well, shit.

Some of these lines are pre-recorded and they're absolutely amazing. Ask her to tell a joke or do an impression, it's incredible.
why would anyone use cortana over siri or google now? [editline]18th July 2015[/editline] especially on their respective devices
Well, it's Cortana. It's a Halo fan's dream come true.
