http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/only-microsoft-knows-the-true-windows-xp-numbers-isnt-telling-238174
The simple fact is that we don't know -- don't even have a clue -- about the number of Windows XP machines still out in the wild. Back-of-the-envelope estimates put the figure at about half a billion machines, but that calculation ignores a host of crucial factors. Foremost among them: How many "real" copies of Windows XP will be thrown to the dogs next month when Microsoft cuts off support? There's only one company that has an inkling of the "real" number, and that company isn't talking. A couple of days ago, Gregg Keizer at Computerworld put the numbers through the wringer as part of his impassioned call for Microsoft to extend XP support. The calculation looks like this: Net Applications says that 29.5 percent of the world's PCs ran XP in February. If there are about 1.65 billion PCs running around (including, presumably, 1.4 billion Windows PCs, using Microsoft's latest figure), that comes to about 488 million XP PCs now in operation. StatCounter, on the other hand, says about 19 percent of the Web hits it tracks come from XP machines. You can do the math.
I can't do the math I lost my calculator help [editline]12th March 2014[/editline] also this isn't news
It's a little skewed, but Steam says about 6%~ of it's users are on XP.
It's a little skewed, but Steam says about 6%~ of it's users are on XP.
Hugely skewed though. There could be a lot of businesses or old people who are resistant to change who are still clinging onto XP.
all the schools around here still use it, no doubt its a huge percentage
This is so useful, thanks.
I know of a lot of business that still use XP as well. Then again, they are medium and small business, and the machines are outdated anyway, only useful for filling and submitting documents and legal forms
Really, I had no idea that the company that made something might be only ones who know exactly how much of it is out there.
I don't give a fuck about the people that still use XP. If you don't want to loose support, stop using a 13 year old OS. Windows 7 came out, and it will work perfectly fine for business, in fact you had the last 5 years, since 2009 to migrate to Win 7. That's enough time to do just that. In the meantime, I'm going to be making bank because Geek Squad, Easy Tech and your other corporate based PC techs will no longer work on XP machines. That's instant side business for me because I'm not competing directly with the store. Win-win for everyone, especially me.
I still use xp. Come at me microsoft
Hugely skewed though. There could be a lot of businesses or old people who are resistant to change who are still clinging onto XP.
my Mom bought computers 12 years ago when XP was brand new and still actively uses it because it's hard to buy four brand new windows 7 ccomputers Also this is her business, we have current PCs at home of course
Run as a limited user instead of as an administrator. It'll protect you from almost everything. Not everything across the board, but a surprisingly high percentage.
I know from personal experience that most of China and Korea still use it.
I know a few people that use it. My mother's laptop came with Vista. Kept having issues with Vista and none of us like it, so i was going to upgrade it to W7. Whoever makes it never made drivers for it that work with W7, so i had to upgrade it to XP instead
I have nothing to base this on statistically but I'm thinking that at least 50% of computers are windows XP globally. Lots of businesses use them.
How many "real" copies of Windows XP will be thrown to the dogs next month when Microsoft cuts off support?
I always laugh a bit when software is nearing the end of support and people run around saying things like this. XP will still work just damn fine after April, people. Quit freaking out. And upgrade to W7 already, you're holding the entire software industry back.
XP will still work just damn fine after April, people.
I really wish MS would change that.
I really wish MS would change that.
April and May's Exploit Wednesdays will be glorious. On the bright side, due to XP and Vista's age, most computers with XP on them are suffering HDD failures.
I still use xp. Come at me microsoft
It's not MS you have to worry about. It's all the guys that have been hoarding their 0-day exploits for when XP support drops.

I worked for a petrol station systems integration firm.. alot of customers were still running Windows 2000.
I have two sealed copies of Windows XP.
I have two sealed copies of Windows XP.
Quick! Use them before Microsoft hits the button next month and turns them to dust!!
I'm not concerned, because I've gone through this before. I have four machines still running XP, hell, I still have a functional IBM Aptiva that runs Windows 95. (fun fact, it was not sold with Windows 95 pre-installed because of Microsoft fuckery) I also have an old as fuck Packard-Bell with Windows 3.1 that still works to this day, it was manufactured in 1992. I come from a different era, kids, a magical time of bootleg floppies and braving the MS-DOS monster when you fucked everything up.
I'm glad that every computer in my school as Windows 7. Imagine if on day all of them were spammed with malware?
My Dad's work just completed their migration from Windows XP to 7, supposedly it was painless and all the drivers and programs were working fine
Hey guys Malware Bytes will still work Avast! Will still work CCleaner will still work and on top of that, on a family computer, or my own, I have never used Windows Support for anything.
I'm more dissapointed in people upgrading tot 7 instead of 8. Upgrading tot a 4 year old os is just as bad as sticking with a 12year old os. And for the people who want tot continue using XP with updates. China will still get updates because xp has something like 80% market there. I'm pretty sure people will port the updates to the English version.

Myself included. So they stay on 7. There is a valid reason to stay on 7. This isn't XP where you just hold on to it because you're old and you need Clippy to tell you how to insert clipart.
